I posted this in the hibiscus forum and haven't gotten a hit yet, so I thought I'd post here and see if anyone knows what is going on.
I got two hibiscus about a week ago from my mom and left them outside in direct sun. They are still in their original pots and on the sidewalk where I put all of my new full sun plants before they go in the ground. We have had rain nearly every day this week and I noticed this morning the buds were yellow and falling off! Only one is doing it not the other and they are side by side. Is it getting too much rain? I figured leaving them in the pots they would drain and having them on the sidewalk they wouldn't absorb the water from the ground. I usually don't have to worry about my roses as they love the rain and extra water.
Hisbiscus yellowing buds and falling
It could be the rain, but hibiscus have a tendency to drop buds when there is a change in their environment.
they may not have seen direct sun for a while either. you never know what kind of conditions they were in before you buy them. if they have roots coming out of the bottom of the pots, they could be burning on the sidewalk too. they faster they get into the ground, the better off they'll be.
Oooo...I did notice some roots coming out when I looked this morning. Great, I will get them in the ground this weekend. Thanks!
Hibiscus are notorious for dropping their buds before opening. Too much or too little water is usually the culprit, but there is also a tiny bug that lays eggs in the bud. I foget what it's called. Cut one of the yellowed buds open and see if you see any critters inside. If not, it will sort itself out once in the ground. If you see bugs, try a systemic like Bayer Tree and Shrub. Good luck.
Be prepared too for them turn have some leaves turn yellow and shed after you plant them.
When I move mine that are in containers from one spot to another, they do this fir a short time.
I did open up a couple of fallen buds and there were no critters so that is a good sign. It could be because I moved them from my mom's to my house. Over there they got eastern sun and now they get western sun. Thanks for all your feedback everyone. I appreciate it!
