I'm hoping one of my esteemed gardening friends can suggest what my be causing deformed asparagus. Thanks in advance. Pictures follow.

And a plant which has taken some strange twists.
By the way, the stalks we collected were delicious. It should be obvious that this is the purple variety. The plants were planted two years ago.
This can be damage from one of the asparagus pests... maybe the beetle? I can't remember. I had it on a few, but it disappeared after I started handpicking the beetles in the morning. (See thread on "Beating the Asparagus Beetle"). Or it just stopped on its own.
