Yesterday I had my 10 chicks outside in a pen in the front yard just 15' from my front porch. They are 1 1/2 week old sex-links. They were in a cage with 1" square wire. When one of my dogs went out through the doggie door she growled so I got up to see what was going on. I noticed one of my chicks laying on it's side so I went out to see what was wrong.
I got a real shock when I saw that her head was missing! Her little body was laying in the cage next to the edge of it. We live on 10 wooded acres and the woods line is about 150' from our porch. My guess is a raccoon. I never thought in a million years something would do this in the middle of the day. Any ideas?
What killed my chick? *Graphic*
so Sorry Rae17!
Could have been a lot of things.. in daylight it might have been a cat or rat even...I also have had a snake pull the heads off poultry that they couldn't swallow.
Larkie
sound like racoons,we had this problem last year for the first time ,they are very bold, they will come back for every chick.we tried to trap them in a live trap that didn`t work.if your dog is left outside and loose that will probably discourage them.
