Fortunately although it is heavy and wet it did not freeze and the streets and sidewalks are clear. Will probably all be gone by the weekend if not sooner.
Look what happened last night!
Looks like Xmas ?

Good thing it didn't freeze, is this making you think of moving west?
Holy mackerel! And here we are sweating to death over here today!
Can't wait for my DS to get home..he flew out yesterday, was hoping to golf after his morning meeting - lol..it's in the 30's here today, breaking 1991 weather record...he comes home on Sat. and goes back next month for a few weeks...bet he's not impressed..will be designing and installing some type of major stainless steel unit in the hospital..doing pre design notes then off to the golf course..ha/ha...my nephew lives in Calgary and he was to join him..guess they'll have a quiet aft.
Oh the gardens will be fine although I suspect some people may have lost tree branches - the snow is very wet and heavy. But it did not freeze - at least at my house - and the streets are clear. It wont last long - if the sun came out it would be gone by tomorrow. Supposed to be a nice weekend.
I brought all my containers into the shed and the back porch - didnt expect a freeze but if I covered them the wet snow would drag the covers down and maybe damage the plants.
Hopefully the damage will be minimal..is this a rare snowfall or does it happen from time to time in May?
Around here snow can happen any month of the year!
But when it happens this time of year it is usually wet and heavy and disappears fast. Most of it is gone in my part of the city except for the rooftops. If the sun had come out (LOL!) it would all be gone.
Saw this on our local news tonight and immediately thought of you. I'm glad you didn't sustain any damage.

I don't live too far from fancyvan, but I'm at a somewhat higher elevation and we still have tons of snow. Sob. No damage though, so that's good. Was a record snow fall day for Calgary.
Joanne
Fancyvan I really feel for you. That is exactly what we had on the weekend accompanied by arctic winds & freezing rain. Think I can forget lily blooms this year. At least the ones that were above ground. Makes you ask yourself why we live in the cold zones. Of course come the middle of summer when it is hotter than heck, we will say the same thing. Glad to hear that you didn't lose any plants.
Grow_Jo, still tons of snow. Not good. Glad to hear there is no damage. Wishing you all the best on your birthday.
Linda
Snow is all gone around my place but there was apparently huge tree damage in some areas of the city - falling on houses and cars and snapping electrical lines.
Glad to read y'all escaped with no major set-backs (except poor Broots...Linda). At my location frost has danced around the outskirts of town and, so far, no damage at my place (chance of frost again tonight though). Knowing that La Nina would be influencing our weather I've just planted the smaller, easier to haul, pots. The majority of my plants are staying cozy in the portable greenhouse/coldframe.
AT this time of year I don't want anybody's snow..........keep it there!!!!!! ;)
Yuck! I'm glad you didn't get any freeze, Carol.
:) Donna
I had a lot of delphiniums break off with the weight of the snow. Should I cut those stems to the ground? But miraculously no damage to the maydays, double flowering plums, or apple trees which were in full bloom. I had them all pruned by a great arborist this winter. Thanks goodness most of my tender stuff was still safely in the greenhouse.
I was in northern Indiana last weekend visiting my sister and they were all complaining how cold their spring was because it was getting down to 50 degrees at night. Are we tough or what!
Theresa
I just dropped in to comment of the last remark "Are we tough or what! "
Lord Have Mercy I guess so!! That's Southern talk for a hearty confirmation of a statement.
Keep the positive thoughts flowing.

Beautiful and I'll have to admit surprising to me due to your weather conditions. That's what I love about DG, the learning experience it offers.
Judy
Judy if you check out my Garden Diary you will see lots of pics of my gardens.
Will do, thanks for the info.
Judy
Fancyvan, the photos are beautiful. Can you explain to a person like me (Amish when it comes to computers how to see your diary?

Carol, I had no idea. What a great discovery!
Fantastic photos. Four questions:
Was yours an open garden last summer? It looks very familiar.
How does one obtain seed for red orach?
What is blooming behind you in the photos with your beautiful sheltie and garden prizes?
What is the plant behind the green ladybug?
Thanks for sharing.
Theresa
Theresa:
Yes my garden was one of the spring gardens open in May. I am in Killarney.
I have lots of Red Orach seed.
If you mean the pic on the steps those are wave petunias - there are actually 4 planters on one side and 2 on the other.
The plant behind the green ladybug is a Rodgersia( although I think there is a different name for it now - better check that out) And it is going to bloom this year for the first time - I think it has been in for at least 4 years!
Hope you can come visit with us on Sunday since you cant make supper Saturday evening. Can you D-mail me your phone number and I can leave you a message what we are planning for Sunday which probably wont be decided until Sat. nite.
