special pot for water canna?

Fountain Inn, SC(Zone 8a)

I was given a water canna for Mothers' Day. Do I need to plant it in one of those pots with holes all over, or will a regular plastic pot do? I am new to pond gardening. My pond is very small , no plants in it yet.

A plastic pot will work just fine. Just be sure to make it big enough, those cannas can grow fast!

tetleytuna, what do you do to keep them from tipping over? I can't seem to find a spot and a pot properly weighted to keep them upright, especially if we have a good breeze blowing.

The most stable pots are the short squatty ones. Look for one that is wide as opposed to tall. For water plants you need not limit yourself to nursery pots since the drain hole is not important. Try looking in the housewares section of walmart for small storage bins.

Incidentally I discovered that most Cannas though, flourish in well drainage growing pots. Most of them, really don't mind wet feet. I grow mine in tub-like container. They flourish, and returned after winter months being outdoors. Even my Pink-tropicana variety, which was grown from seeds. These are blooming now.

Huh! Well I just learned something. There are a lot of storage containers that are really much better suited than nursery pots! For soil gardening I use a metal bushel basket for a tote container as I work. It carries most of the tools, fertilizers etc. I am planning on using to the garden. You can transport something wet in it without dripping all over yourself. It has a rounded bottom, so it slides easily along the ground as I work. It has handles for lifting. When full of sod or whatever I know that it is the max I can lift so I'd better empty it. That metal bushel basket is an extra right hand in the garden.

Check these tubs out. I have all different sizes and use them for everything including hauling firewood.

Neat jeri11. The link didn't quite work but I managed to find the trug tubs. You can sure see uses for those. Maybe there should be a "container" forum!

I love them. I have my potting soil in one, mulch in another, I put weeds in one and when working in the pond they float so I just fill them up and then float them to the edge and trug them out.

I think they are made of old tires or something and you can run over them, overload them and not even the handle comes off.

Someone else liked them so much a year ago they took all but 2 so I found I couldn't work with that few and ordered more this year.
