Oleander help!

Longview, TX(Zone 8a)

I planted my first oleander this year. 2 beautiful ones with gorgeous fuschia flowers on them. But now entire branches are turning yellow on me. My research indicates drought stress but as you all well know, that's impossible with all this rain, isn't it? Also, there are very light white spots on them, as if I sprayed them with salt water. Does anybody know what's going on?

Sometimes when it rains just for a few minutes during a hot sunny day here in TX, the leaves on my plants are blistered. Could that be the case?

hi there,
i think it cause of all the rain we have had,,, they like to be dry and have good drainage... they should come back with doing nothing to em. if you cut them back a bit , remember they are very poisonous, be careful not to inhale the fumes... i cut mine back one year. they were over 10 feet tall and had no clue why the next day i could barely breathe.... you need also to wear gloves if you cut em back. oleanders are so hardy, really nothing kills em, they may look bad but mother nature shall heal the wounds.
take care

Greenie - they are prolific in Galveston. I think the humid, salty air is actually something they like. You've got me thinking. I'll do a little reading up and get back with ya.

Do your leaves look like this?

Nope, they are solid yellow and the whole branch is that way, not just a leaf. Well actually now 2 brances are that way.

hmmm....I agree with everyone else....proabably too much water. Is it in a spot that gets good drainage?

Just found this:

"Oleander has few diseases that bother it, but in extended wet seasons, root rot may take its toll. The typical Southern bugs, including aphids, mealy bug and scale, may choose to attack oleander. The oleander caterpillar, that can completely defoliate the plant, may also attack. However, insecticides easily control the caterpillar. "

Nothing is eating it, unlike the REST of my garden . It may be root rot. This IS texas so we know the wet will not last long! I'll wait it out and see what happens. Thanks for looking though, I sure appreciate it!!

good information knolan....thanks.....we are missing all the good rain right now.....the farmers and gardeners need it in south texas..

Greenie, I have to wonder if it is because of the rain? Most of the oleander I 've seen around here look fine. I live just north of East Mountain. Did you buy yours around here? I'm in the market for one and the color of yours sound beautiful.

I got it from the East Texas Garden Center here in Longview off the Loop and Judson. Have you ever been there? Their plant select is great and VERY reasonably priced. You can ride around the place in golf carts and they give you bottles of water. I love the place!! I'm thinking it might be all the rain too...I hope so anyway. I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens. If you need directions, let me know.

Sounds like a good road trip! ;-))

Longview, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey, if you come this way, I'll even DRIVE you around in the golf cart!! =)

If the area in which the oleander is planted does not drain well, this can happen when it receives a lot of water especially when there hasn't been much sunshine.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I will keep that in mind Greenie!! LOL!

Longview, TX(Zone 8a)

Hey, I owe you...I'm raising big fat monarch cats because of you. Our first one should emerge in the next few days!! =)

Gilmer, TX

I haven't been there, can't believe there is a garden center in this area I didn't know about. It will definitely be on my 'to do' list now that school is out and I'm free for the summer. Thanks Greenie

Great news! Glad you could help those butterflies! I have only seen a couple Monarchs here so far this year. :-( I was able to raise a Mourning Cloak last month and have a Black Swallowtail cat in 2nd instar now, so that helps!

Longview, TX(Zone 8a)

Today we can see her wings for the first time, though her pupae is still green. We collected 3 swallowtail cats yesterday that have been munching on my dill for 2 weeks and getting nice and fat. I put them in my bfly house with the deal and they are in there happily munching away. I figured I had better collect them before the birds saw them now that they are getting so chubby. =) Other than that, our butterfly population is nearly zero this year...which is so disappointing. Last year I had droves of them and I planted even more this year to attract them. I have some American Ladys and a few Buckeyes and had one GF which has since disappeared. Must have been a male because there are no eggs on my passion vine. I hope they eventually find their way back here.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I think they are just a bit slower getting here this year because of our bad winter that we had very late this year. I sure hope so. If any good can come of all of the flood of rain, maybe plants will grow bigger and better this year too.

Longview, TX(Zone 8a)

That's my hope!! Oh, I had such a fun surprise this afternoon. I went to Lowe's to get more dill for my swallowtail cats and I found a dill plant with a swallowtail cat on it!! =) So I brought him home and he's safe in his new condo. I think they're all getting close to molting.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Yea!, glad you got the bonus plant!

Cypress, TX(Zone 9a)

I have 5 young oleanders in front of the house and we have been getting a LOT of rain in the past week. Thank goodness no flooding though. However, when I was out yesterday, I did notice that they have a few yellowing leaves. It could really be too much rain. I expect they will bounce back. I had these since last year and made it through severe neglect (all the plants I had last year went through neglect if you have followed my other threads). I finally got them in the ground and gave them a little fertilizer in early spring and had really started to do well. I really do hope they will bounce back after all this rain. IHopefully, yours do too!
