I wanted to try growing some new plants this spring, so one of the newbies I bought was Gloxinia. I had wanted this for some time, so of course, I bought three!!! I did not know until I began participating in this forum that they were Gessies (Sinningia speciosa). When I purchased the rhizomes, I know they were named cultivars... now all I remember is that I have a dark red, a dark purple, and a "tiger" pink.
I planted the rhizomes 4/17/07, and boy, have they grown! They sit in my east window. Here is a photo of all three together...
My Gloxinias
I'll keep everyone posted on their progress with photos. Thanks for letting me share.
Karen
OK!!! I have never tried to grow a gloxinia...nice going
Good Job!
I have a wee lil glox I'm trying to figure out exactly what it would like from me... I can't wait to see the blooms on yours.
Good growing,
MsC
Give yourself a pat on the back, Karen! They look great and one in bud already. Please do post updates.
Thanks! I have honestly done nothing but throw them in their pots and put them in the east window. Between my back injury, moving, kids, and everything else that still needs to be potted up, I haven't even fed them! I do have to brush them and use a lint brush on them regularly... Ha! My cats like to sit in the window, and rub up against them. They are good not to nibble of knock over, but their hairs gets on the fuzzy leafed plants!
roflol !!! Lint brush!
Gloxinias are great. If I had space, I would grow more of them. I have a natural form of Sinn speciosa just opening up and the flowers are gigantic.....
If you like these things and like growing from seed, I especially recommend Charles Lawn's mixed seed. I believe the seed fund has some. His hybridizing program manages some incredible flowers! Pix of just a few: http://www.gesneriads.ca/sinni189.htm
Keyring, this is making me want to grow from seed!!!!! The pictures you showed are yummy looking......another project and will need another hour added to my days (LOL)
Where can I find seeds or rhizones of Gloxina?
TIA Patti
Hi Patti, you might want to check the sticky thread for possible sources. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/565223/
When you browse, remember that you are looking for "Florist's Gloxinias", properly called "Sinningia speciosa". Actual, real, Gloxinias are a different plant all together.
I saw some at Trader Joes today - pretty nice looking. They would be noids, of course. I know they've shown up at HD and Lowes and such as well.
thanks for the information Keyring......I wouldn't have known that....and I am thinking about trying.....still thinking as all gro-light stands are loaded right now .......
Thanks Keyring for the info.
Patti

OMG How pretty they are!!! Great growing!
Those are beautiful! I especially like the red one - such a vivid color! :o)
Ki, those Charles Lawn ones are gorgeous! Guess I'll go check out the seed fund today. When does the next one come out? I'm wondering if I've waited so long now that I should just wait til the next one comes out to order...
Oops! Purple is turned sideways! Aahh well... she's still pretty in the sunlight!
Amazing!
I was at Lowes yesterday and the lady in the garden dept.was picking off the spent flower stems from these plants and throwing them away.I asked her if I could have a few of them and she sent me home with one of each color.I wonder if they will grow a tuber?
Let us know if they do, Jan! How lucky you were to be there at the right time! :o)
Aahhh well! Still lovely blooms that brighten my bedroom and my mornings!
(Sure would have liked to see that 'Tiger Pink' though.....)
;-)
Very pretty Karen!
