zinc pots on deck

vancouver, Canada

Any thoughts or experience on using a black zinc pots on a hot deck. We are wondering if the pot will get too hot and damage the plants. They told us at the store that they will just need to be watered more regularly.
Thanks

Its an interesting question - I'm not sure just watering more is the answer, the pots are not going to transpire the way clay would - so you aren't going to dry out as fast as clay pots - keeping them really wet may mean you just end up steam cooking the poor plants.

If the are angular they would be easy to line them first with a layer of styrofoam packing material - a couple of layers of cardboard in a circular pot might be a good idea - I am thinking about the roots coming into contact with the metal in summer, and everything freezing in winter. The other thing you could do is use the zinc pots as a sleeve for clay or plastic pots - just setting one pot inside the other then filling in around the sides and over the top with bark or gravel.

Think we need Growin to intercede here - he always has good information, and he is up your way.
