Moving - How do I transplant my butterfly gingers?

Sunset Beach, NC(Zone 8a)

I'll be moving back to NC in a couple of months and want to take some of my butterfly gingers. I know they're fairly tough and I'm thinking I'll just dig up the rhizomes (even though they'll be blooming at that time) and keep them moist in a big plastic bag with holes to keep air circulation. What do you think? Should I go ahead and cut the leaves/blooms off to keep the size down adn just wait for them to bloom next year after they're replanted?
Thanks!

If you have room I would not cut them. Don't know where you'll be going in NC, but my white butterfly ginger bloomed right around Thanksgiving here-right before the big frosts come. The closer you are to the coast, the longer they will bloom for you. When you move, you could either pot them up or put them in a bag like you said-I'd wrap the rhizomes in newspaper or paper towels and dampen them for the trip (like you would pack them for a trade, kinda).

Welcome back to NC!

Thanks! I'll be back at Sunset Beach on the coast between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach. I had a few up there before, but many more now since I love them. Thanks again!

Sunset is very nice, I grew up in Atlantic Beach and my folks are still there. I actually miss it now, being in the Piedmont where it is soooo hot and there is no water nearby! But, ginger grows here, too, so at least I can still have a tropical look. ;)

Maryville, TN(Zone 6b)

Hi, I grow them in Maryville Tn. , just outside of Knoxville, and I transplant them whenever the urge hits me. Rhizomes are the easiest things to transplant at any time, just give them water for a couple of weeks to get them started. Don't cut them.
