UFH (unidentified found herb)

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

I know I planted this, I remember the leaf shape and the smell. But I don't remember what it is!
It has long thin leaves, similar to a very young goldenrod, and has a sweet clove-like scent and taste. Does that sound familiar to anyone?

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

I found it, it's French Tarragon. Boy, fresh leaves don't even resemble the dried flavor! the leaves are wonderful!

Ah cool! I heard the French is usually propagated from cuttings rarely seeds. Where did you find the seeds?

I am excited as I just received a start of this plant yesterday in a DG trade from a sweetie! I love the anise flavor.

I think I bought a greenhouse plant. Here on the Lakeshore there are nearly as many greenhouses as people houses! LOL! (No tax on greenhouses, they are considered "temporary".)

I was wondering if the tarragon multiplies like oregano or if I need to buy more plants to add to it. I would wear that scent as a perfume! Mmmmm....

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

It tastes NOTHING like the dried old stuff!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I believe it will multiply from the root system. I wonder how hardy it will be in your area?
Rereading your post, I wonder where I thought you have planted from seed... sorry. Duh~ here. : )

You also mentioned a clove scent. To me it has an anise or licorice fragrance. I do like it...

I was reaching for a description, and clove came to mind first, but it looks exactly like French Tarragon.

This came up 2 years in a row but last year I never got around to weeding around it, much less figuring out what I had planted. This year will be different. I *always* say that. LOL!

Well it is certainly delightful. Hope you make use of it this summer. : )

Nope it isn't! I tasted the tarragon at the herb shop today and it tastes like pure licorice. Hmmm.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Not tarragon? Any chance of a picture?

I don't have any but what dose anise hyssop look like?

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

It looks just like this. http://www.felcopruners.net/images/herb%20french%20tarragon.jpg

And...to my embarrassment... today I found a plant marker hidden in the soil next to the plant. It says "French Tarragon". LOL! But it doesn't taste like licorice or anise, and it isn't "tongue numbing".

I think it may have been a mis labeled Russian Tarragon. http://www.abc.net.au/overnights/stories/m973449.jpg

This is the type tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus) that is in my herb garden.

What taste or fragrance does the Russian tarragon have?

Grand Haven, MI(Zone 5a)

Milder, less flavor. I think mine is Russian. I just bought another this week, labeled French and it looks more like yours.
