Went to a party and they had a banana of some sort that actually fruited last. They've been growing it for about 3 years from a "stalk" someone gave them. Think it's a dwarf cavendish. Anyone have experience with those?
Anyone have a 'Dwarf Cavendish'
i havent had one, but was it outside? are they hardy here?
I had a 'Super Dwarf Cavendish'-it was very easy to grow (as in I managed not to kill it) and did well in a pot. I fertilize with bone & blood meal, etc. I got it near the end of the season and overwintered it in the basement-but I traded it to someone because it is not hardy here. It's a great plant, and I'm sure Plantfiles at least has a little something :)
These are outside year round. They die back to the ground every year and mutliple. I'm going to plant one of these, I'm trying to figure out what exactly they are. I'll take some pictures this weekend.
Best kind of plant, free. LOL.
where did you get the plant from? now im interested
Diehrd I haven't gotten the plant yet. Like I said I saw it at a party last weekend and the host was giving a run down on the banana. She was surprised it fruited last year and didn't know what kind of banana it was. She said if I want to give it a try come by and dig up a stalk. That's the way she started hers. Someone gave her a stalk as a house warming present when she moved in. Probably this weekend I'll do that.
I have one but this is the first year in the ground. It spent the winter in a pot on my deck and survived beautifully - no dieback at all. I got it last fall in a great "end of season" sale and I think it was from Logees.
So many bananas do well here; currently I am looking for an ice cream and a raja puri, they are both supposed to be delicious and cold hardy.
The non edible Musa Basjoo has proven to be a very large weed for me.
I might be wrong about this ladies banana dying back every year. I see so many drop as soon as we have a 30 degree night. I'll have to ask her if it makes it through the winter.
Bluffton is a bit cooler than here, my climate is closer to HHI's.
I'm low balling on the zone. 8b is safe but I'm probably 9a. I've had winters with no frost and on the other hand the coldest I've seen it here in 16 years was 19 degrees one night. Choas broke loose. Lots of pipes broke etc, things just aren't built for 19 around here. I can pretty much count on a week where the lows are around 26-27 every night. I can get away with most anything that can take a light frost.
Looked at the banana and as near as I can come I think it's a dwarf cavendish and it doesn't die back as soon as it's 32 or lower. They did get bananas but something turned them black so they threw them out. Looks like I'll be growing bananas this year. LOL. My yard is starting to fill up, have to figure out flowers this year. I'm not good at flowers. I just don't know much about them, bloom times etc.
I often watch the entrances to the "plantations" and see what they plant. I have discovered some great plant combinations along 278.
Your right, every time I'm in or around a planttation I keep an eye on what they planted. Some of the hotels have odd and exotic plants kind of scatter around, you have to look or you probably won't notice them. I'm getting a much better eye for plants.
coligny plaza and the areas arund it are slo a good place to see more exotic plants. i was there today, and it seems they has some kind of cassia that was grown as a large shrub/ small tree. i wonder what it is
Home Depot in Raleigh has Dwarf Cavendish for $10, they were about 2 feet tall.
