Dahlia's ?

Bluffton, SC(Zone 9a)

Lowe's was getting rid of Dahlietta Louise Dahlias for a dollar so I bought a couple. Only problem is I know nothing about them. Are they perenials in the low country? They get real big? On the other hand are these just going to die on me when it gets hot?

Looked it up in plant files but there were a bunch of different dahlias so I was sure what was up with the ones they have. They're in rough shape that's why they were a dollar.

If you're zone 8b most if not all dahlias will be perennial as long as they have decent drainage. (That means no heavy clay soil, or puddles/standing water especially in the winter.) I base this assumption on the fact that dahlias return here in z7b ... however I've pretty much given up on them as they don't seem to like our hot, humid summers. But for a dollar it's worth a try.

That's what I'm wondering. I can count on heat and humidity. Wonder what would happen if I put one in a shady spot? I'll put one in shade and one in sun, see what happens.

Hi...Look it up in the gardeners guide for charleston..needs 6 hrs. of sun, well drain soil, air circulation and protection from the wind. Good luck! I never grew them but for a dollar it's worth a try.

I have sandy soil so that's not a problem. 6 hrs of morning sun wouldn't be a problem. Humidity may be a problem and 95+ temps. I know the answer probably in August, if it falls over dead I'll know what happened.
