Peanut butter this time of year?

Southern, NH(Zone 5b)

I have a (huge, warehouse size) tub of peanut butter "inherited" from a friend that couldn't use it. Are the birds interested in PB this time of year? I was thinking of combining it with plain oatmeal (we have a ton of that, too) and leaving it out a small hunk at a time on our bench-type feeder.

Its still a bit cool in your area so sure go ahead and try it. Maybe you could throw some seeds and corn flour into the mix.

Thanks!

I make a 'No Melt' Peanut Butter Suet that I put out for the birds year round. The woodpeckers & chickadees love it. The woodpeckers take it back to the nest & when the young can fly they bring the young ones to the yard to eat. Great fun to watch them.

Broots, what's in your mix?

ckk, this is taken from a little book put out by Bird Watchers Digest titled 'Enjoying Woodpeckers More'.

No-Melt Peanut Butter Suet
2 cups crunchy peanut butter
2 cups lard (NO substitutes)
4 cups 'quick cook' oats
4 cups cornmeal
2 cups white flour
2/3 cup sugar

Melt the lard & peanut butter in pot over low heat. Stir in the remaining ingredients. Spoon this mixture into square freezer containers, packing firmly to about 1-1/2 inches thick. Cover with container lid. Store it in the freezer. It will not melt in summer or warm weather. A few raisins or chopped nuts may be added.

Note:If mixture is not fairly stiff in consistency, add a small amount of cornmeal or oats. This recipe will make six or seven suet cakes.

I always add a few handfuls of shelled, unsalted sunflower seeds. I also use whole wheat flour instead of the white if I have it.

I put this in the suet cage, also use it in my suet log & sometimes just make a ball with the suet & put it in an onion bag.

Grandmaggie & ckk, hope you enjoy it, or maybe I should say, I hope your birds enjoy it.
