Peacock Gingers, Anyone???

Clemmons, NC(Zone 7b)

I planted my first Peacock ginger-'Rotunda-Raven' from B& B's. I planted it in pretty deep shade and have given it plenty of water. The markings seem to be fading and the leaves are turning darker. Should I have planted in a bit more sun or cut back on the water? I have not fed it yet either. It doesn't look too bad yet, just the markings have faded. Anyone have advice?

Kaempferias like shade, filtered light. They don't like direct sunlight. Be careful not to over water it and when it goes dormant this fall do not water at all until next spring, or it will rot. The marking aren't as intense sometimes as the foliage ages it will sometimes fade, newer foliage is more heavily marked. Use a good time released fertilizer, like Dynamite.

Thanks birdlady--ironically, yesterday I noticed the markings were back! I feel dumb-must have been too much water. I kinda doubt they will make it outside for the winter here, but I will try a little bit. What a beautiful plant! Maybe if I put an upside down pot on it it will stay drier over winter?

I would try leaving a little piece cover it ith the pot and then a lot of mulch. What the heck, don't know if you don't try. I have anthuriums in my garden and I'm really 8b more than 9a and they're not supposed to grow this far north. So you never know, I find little mocro climates in my yard and experiment alot.

:) I think I like the experimenting almost as much as growing the reliable ones!
