The chicks I bought May 1 at an auction, have grown most of their feathers, but appear not to be growning them on their tummies. Is there such a breed or are they just growing in slower? Or do I just have a bunch of 'odd' chicks?
Naked Belly Chicks
Morning Halnik ! Hmm ,I seem to remember that my chicks were slower growing their tummy feathers too! When they did start growing though, they filled in really quickly. What was funny though is one that reached up,apparently,to high and burned his head on the warming bulb and has a permanent burn spot there! You never know what what your going to get at an auction! I try to go through the barn befor hand to look at the birds , and take down the cage numbers of the ones I really want. I try to pick out the ones that lok healthy and if possible I try to only bid on the ones that are from sellers I know and trust to bring healthy chicks!
But slow tummy feathers is nothng to worry about!
I've just started going to auctions, so I'm a newbie at it. I picked up a bunch of 8 mixed chicks on Saturday and 5 have feathers on their feet. One of which has the extra 'toe' on each foot. It wasn't said that they were part silkie. I don't mind at all since I've started going to look for some different colors of silkies. I already have some white.
Here's a pic of one with feathers but not the extra toe.
I love to go to the poultry auctions ! True, you never know what you're going to see there.
Once I bought 8 of the cutest chicks, about 1 week old. One died the next day, and the other 7 were all ROOSTERS ! hehe.
But then, I bought one nearly grown Araucana Rooster.......that laid an egg the next month ! He's still laying those pretty green eggs by the way. Yep, it's fun going to the auction. Especially if you like a little adventure and surprise here and there.
Oh Halnik they are so cute! the one with the extra toes and feathered shanks could be a Sultan, I know that there are a couple of breeds that have the Fifth toe!
Yeah, that definitely doesn't look like any silkie baby I've seen. I've seen a few silkie crosses that have the 5th toe, but not a full breed silkie with that down coloration. What an adorable chick it is!!
It will be very interesting to see what they turn out to look like. I can't wait. It's going to be a long few weeks.
I can think of 5 breeds have 5 toes
Silkie(black skin)
Sultans
Houdans
Dorking
Faverolles
your chicks may be faverolles
feathered leg
right colors
5 toes
