I got my baby Turkeys!!!! I Need help!!!

Eatonton, GA(Zone 8b)

Well I finally lucked up at the auction last night! I have been going and going ,looking for Royal Palm Turkeys! The first time ,several months back, They had a pretty beat up Tom, but young. He was so nasty and raggedy, but I figured I could get him for a song and take him home! I was sure with a lot of love and rehab I could turn him into a fat and sassy Big boy! Welllllllllll, would you believe that raggedy thing brought over $40.00!!!!!!!! I definitely couldnt manage that! So he went home with someone else!
I look for them every time I go to market! I only want a pair. Usually they are grown or mostly so, so the prices would range much too high for me!
So last night they had 2 tiny cages with a pair in each one! I waited on the first pair, looked to be at least well started and about 4 weeks old! So I sat there with the wiggles trying to get a bid in and realized that there were about 6 people bidding on them, soooooooo the bids kept getting higher and higher!
Now when I say high, I mean they started out at $5.00 apiece, I could handle that, but when the bid got up to 7 then 8 , I just sat back and let all the breath out that I had been holding! I knew that the bids were going way over my head! Then just as I gave up, wouldnt you know it the actioneer called $8.90 each and SOLD!!!! I was so sad!
Now I dont give up that easily!!! So I made up my mind! I wasnt going to buy anything else... I didnt NEED any thing other than the last pair of b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l White Palm Babies coming up!!!! So they brought them out! They were the tiniest little things I had ever seen for a Turkey, Still with a little bit of FLuff and because it was so late in the evening they had already given up and were trying to sleep , so they wouldnt move! I also noticed that there was NO water in there tiny little wire cage! Poor little things they had been there all day since about 2:00 or before and it was now going on 9:00 PM!
Now I was worried! I know Turkeys can be difficult when babies! I gathered my good ole southern Country girl backbone and sat high in the Saddle, in that ole fold up chair and waited for them to begin the bidding!
Okay bids started at $2.00, that was very good for me, then it went to $3, then $3.50 , then 4 then 5 , $5.50...,$5.75..., $6.00,...$7.00....$7.25...and I grabbed for it $7.50 !!!!! $7.50 ,,,"$8.00 do I hear $8.00...... $7.50 it is ...Sold To the lady nearly falling out of her Chair!!!!!"
Okay , Okay, maybe it wasnt all that dramatic, but I WON!!!!! So here are my Precious little Turkeys!
So very Tired and Thirsty !

I'm glad you got the turkeys.
Now what is a "White Palm" turkey ?
They will probably grow like weeds with no special care.
Have a Great Day!

I put them under the red Brooder light to warm them up ! They never even moved, all night! This morning I couldnt get either to drink, I helped , dipping their beaks into warm water , to no avail!
So I mixed up a gruel of Wildbird seed ( ground to a powder in my old coffee grinder ) and ground up some Beneful lamb and rice dry dog food, added hot water. I took a plastic drinking straw and cut the end off into a point! Then dipped it into the gruel and hand fed the babies! They didnt fight it but it took a couple of tries for them to swallow!

Hi Country Gardens!!! Good Sunday Morning to Ya! Royal White Palms are the prettiest things I have ever seen! They are a beautiful solid white , with Black Bands around their tail feathers! I dont know yet how to do the link thing , but if you google McMurray or Feather site you can pull up pictures!

So how are they doing? I wish so much that we had a poultry auction in our neck of the woods. What are you going to do with them? Breed them or eat them or just love them?

I put my day old turkey poults in with day old chicks and it helped them a lot get use to eating and drinking on their own. This is my first season having turkeys and I had read there are stupid and will die from not eating and drinking because they spend so much time looking upward. The theory is the chicks get their attention and they look down and eventually follow suit. I put 9 turkey poults (2-royal palm, 3-bourbon red, 1-narragnasett and 3 white) in with 5 buff orpington chicks and it went very well.

I feed them a game bird starter, it's high protein and they require more protein than chicks.

Good luck with your babies !!

Hey Yall! Well that post from this morning was at 9:30 and here it is now 3:00 and Im almost 200 miles from where I was!!! Ha haha! Im at my Mom's, she has a dr. appointment tomorrow and Im going to drive them!
the reason Im writing this is to let you all know I brought the baby Turkeys with me! I put them in a parakeet cage and away we went! I am having to hand feed them right now and I didnt want to take a chance on them dehydrating while Im gone! So far they are drinking and eating the wet mush I made , from the end of the straw! the little girl started pecking at it first and the boy later ! Now they are both trying to drink from a pebble filled dish! So dont worry , they are doing fine!
The funny thing is that my Dad had to come out to the car and help me take them to his garage and feed them! He's so funny! He claims he doesnt want any animals and he hae chickens...... Too funny! You all should have seen him talking to them!!! Shhhhhhh! dont tell him I told you!!!
No pictures til I get back home, I forgot my camera! Which made me mad, cause Dad said a wild Mallard Duck had about a dozen babies yesterday and they are out on the pond! I know you all would have enjoyed seeing that!!! Okay later you guys!

" Hey Mom, Wheres the straw?"
Well we made it back home this morning , and as you can see the Turkey babies are doing just great! I fed them with a straw until this morning when I saw them finally eating from the feeder! Yesterday the little Girl " Flossie Mae", found our she had wings! Too funny, I had put her on the ground to get some excersize and She "Excersized" allright!
I had to get a fish dip net to catch her with , Phewwww! Im too fat for all that ! LOL
But here they are!

Oh , and I forgot to say that the little Tom has a name too, its "Gentleman Jim", because when he grows up he will be quite the Dandy!

I don't know which way it goes, but turkeys & chickens shouldn't be together. One gives the other a deadly disease. Might someone else know about this.

Thanks Bernie! We actually went through this on another thread, but thank You! I believe you only have to worry if they are sick to begin with and if kept in very unclean quarters! My grand mother always raised her Turkeys with her chickens! We always had healthy birds!
My are in a 10X 20 Chicken Tractor that will be moved everyday! So clean sand and grass are in their futures! I appreciate any and all comments and input!
