Broken stem

My husband accidentally knocked a stem off my hanging begonia outside. Unfortunately it is the one that has the two buds that were ready to bloom. Is there any way for me to save this or is it over? I brought it in the house and put it in water. Hoping. Karen (aka liebran)

I don't know a lot about begonias, but I was given a large cutting of a tuberous begonia, stuck it in water, and all it did was rot--after blooming. Was this just my bad luck, or can the tuberous not root in water?
