Please help - I have no idea!

Salt Lake City, UT

Hello all,

I am attempting to creat a care manual for the plants inside the library where I work. I just don't know what this one is, and would appreciate any help. I haven't been able to find it in the pictures I have browsed, but hoped to get some guidance here.

Thanks for any help!

You might want to post this in the plant identification forum.

Meg,

It almost looks like an Aralia to me. My first thought was the "Balfor Aralia", but the "Balfor" leaves have an off-white edging. Maybe this still is the same, but being in a Library, has lost all it's variegation. That can happen with plants in a low light situation.

If it is an Aralia, it likes pretty bright light. The woody stems seem look like that of an older Aralia plant.

Just a guess.....Anyone else????

Gitagal,
I was thinking along those same lines....an aralia. I wasn't sure if what I was seeing was variegation or not near the top part of the plant where perhaps the light is stronger vs. the bottom.

I was thinking also--after I posted my reply. There IS an all green Aralia that looks like the one above.

It might be a Fiddle Leaf Ficus ... here's the link to Plant Files, look at some of the pic's and see if it could be your plant!

Plantlady,

I don't think so. I have a Fiddle-Leaf Ficus and it looks all together different. For one, the leaves are at least 10" long....

Aralia "Fabian" by Exotic Angels. I had one but it died :(

Here is an internet photo of Aralia 'Fabian'. I think you nailed it, Nematanthusnut.

...and killed it. I bought mine in the winter and I think the dry heat in the house did it in. It began dying almost as soon as I got it home.

Thank you so much, I think this is certainly it. We actually just placed this in a South facing window, it has only been in the library about a month. Any sense of whether I should move it? We have some very sunny west windows as well. I appreciate the help!

Your aralia should be happy in it's southern exposure. Here's a link to more general cultural information.

Yours is really a nice one, Meg....curious...how large is it? (can't tell by the photo)
I've only ever seen small plants of this one.
