Trap plan! Eufaula

Monticello, GA

I am guessing that eufaula has not trapped anything! Am I right? I am sure we would have heard about it here.
I hope the murder spree has quit, you were losing chicks there @ a fast rate.
I know , you been replacing them though... Is all calm now? I think it was cats on at least one!!! The head missing is a give-away.
Drove by the other day and I saw a wild looking grey cat cross the road in front of me,,,just about your house... I tryed to hit it ,,,but was tooo fast!!! I'm sorry ,,,but I hate house cats left to roam! They are born killers! They will kill young quail, young turkeys, dang near anything they can catch!

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Excuse me, but are you saying you go around trying to hit cats with your car because you assume they aren't someone's pet, you have decided no one should allow their cat out of the house and you hate them?!!!

Shenandoah Valley, VA(Zone 6b)

My cat does kill rodents, but is uninterested in birds. Regardless, ugh. Hate to think someone would be *aiming* for him.

Robertsville, MO

Turkeybeard,
You make me lololo about the cat but it is meanto hit them..
I myself am a cat lover and KB and NB can't have any around them it make them swell up in the face so I have 4 out side cats and they keep getting mice.. Just think about mice in your home in the winter and you will think twice about running them our ...
The cat keep critters down and if they where a stray just think
about them mice getting in your home and cureling all over you at night.. The mice can carry the pleg!!!! Cats keep them a way...

Oooooops! I missed this thread! Hold Up Everybody! Ole Turkeybeard, is a good fella! Honestly! He just knows that I have been ,(as well as a few others) been over-run with feral cats here! He would never kill an animal for no reason! I myself have tried to trap these cats ,this past month, to no avail! We have seen these wild cats here ,some as big as a grown raccoon! ....And they are not Friendly! We are scared todeath that some are carrying diseases as well !
The animal control here in our county are overrun with calls everyday about feral cats and dogs , They are so busy that they hardly ever get to our side of the county! So , we have to take matters into our own hands! Feral Cats areno better than Feral dogs that kill! I Hate killing anything, but when it comes to having to protect my animals, including my Mr. Pepito, from a wild diseased Feral cat ,well sometimes the actions are needed!
No, I dont believe Turkeybeard would deliberately set out to run down a cat. He just knew my heartbreaking situation here, and he saw one of the main reasons why we arent able to keep our chicks safe!
Believe me if you saw these cats, you would understand! And I hope you all never have to go into your barn, and pick up the poor dead babies, like I have, after running off one of these cats, after a killing spree!
I had not mentioned the cats before but sparingly, because I didnt want an uproar! Im sorry you all had to hear about this! I just hate the unkind people here who just have to have a Cute little "Kitty" for a while ,then dont neuter or spay, then get tired of them and then quit even feeding them! So they turn feral and we all know how many kittens can be born if not controlled ! Right now, I can tell you there are 2 Male grays, 3 short hair Tabbies, one long hair Tabby, and a Beautiful white mxed Persian. I trapped two female Tabbys, last year, and called animal control to pick them up! One was so feral they had to put her down immediately! We know of at least 6 more females .
Im sitting here crying right now! I sound like an old harpy, but I cant even have a good barn cat, because of these animals!
okay I'm through! Just know these things do exist and we have to do what needs to be done to eliminate a serious problem!!!
PLEASE neuter and spay !

No worries.

I agree...
feral cats are a major problem
I live on a dead end road and there is all State land down there
and across the street
unwanted pets are dropped at the end of the road constantly
especially pregnant females
some,if they are lucky and freindly find a home with me or my neighbors
others, which breed and inbreed have to be delt with
At one point there were 24 cats hanging out in my barn
2 of which were mine
they(the feral cats) would spit and his at me if I went in there
then they would come onto my porch and hiss and spit when I'd walk out my door
tear up my cats costing me money to have them sewn up
I tried to get a vet to come out and at least give rabies shots
they wanted 19 bucks a cat plus do a "well cat visit" on each cat at 45 bucks each
you do the math.........

most strays around my neighborhood are now shot if they become a problem, its not that the neighborhood wants to do it,most of them have pet cats and love them....but sometimes you have to say enough......we try to find the owners first....an impossible task

dogs the dog catcher will pick up but cats they really won't deal with

sorry if this offends anyone ,but if irresponsible people continue to do what they do and burden others with the problem of what to do with their unwanted animals those burdened people are gunna do what they gotta do to save whats theirs

I jUst wanted to say... Thank you Crested Chick, for your efforts!

I agree completely. I LOVE animals and do whatever I reasonably can to take care of them, but you cannot allow ANY animal to be a threat to you and your family’s safety, health, property, and animals. When public officials are unresponsive, and too many in the general public irresponsible, then you have to do whatever is necessary to protect yourself. ....It is life in the (real) world, and you must use common sense. You don’t have to torture or abuse animals, but you MUST protect yourself.

Running a cat down with a car is torture and abuse. What if it is only injured and lies there for hours in pain? Not to mention that glancing at a cat from your car certainly won't tell you if it's a stray or someone's pet. I assume from the poster's post that they make the assumption that if a cat is out wandering around, they have a right to kill it whether it's a stray or a pet.

By the way, I know where I live and I would imagine in most other jurisdictions, doing this is not only cruel it's illegal.

Whether people are irresponsible with cats or feral cats are a problem is beside the point. Purposely hitting them with your car certainly isn't the solution.

Fowlerville, MI(Zone 5b)

Hart, I do not condone running down a cat or any animal with a car for the very reasons you mentioned.

But I do empathize with folks who have to live with this problem every day and understand their frustration. For people to humanely handle a safety and health problem that is threatening them (is) appropriate. It might be helpful for them to talk to their neighbors and see if they have any pets. By talking to neighbors, it will be easier to know which animals are pets and which are wild. Ask them if they are having the same problem. My parents taught me that a responsible pet owner does not allow his or her animals to freely roam on the people's property without prior permission. Now, we all know that the very nature of cats makes it difficult to keep them from roaming; nevertheless, it is our responsibility to do so.

Laws often differ from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. If there are laws on the books that prohibit you from personally taking care of the problem, then it might be time to organize as neighbors or as a community. Make an appointment for (all of you affected by this problem) to visit your local, township, or county representatives who are responsible for animal control, and respectfully insist that they take care of the problem promptly. You may also want to document the problem and take photographs with you if you can. I’d be curious to see if they would allow you to bring a caged feral cat to your meeting as exhibit “A”. (Wouldn't that make your case!) …..If you do not get satisfaction from them, then you have other options. If there are no laws that prevent you from protecting yourself from feral cats, etc., then you should take care of the problem as humanely as possible.

I can’t imagine any of you living with this condition, which will only get worse with time, so I’d be interested in hearing what happens. There IS strength and influence in numbers, if you have to organize as a group.

Get a grip! The little kitty kat is fine! I did not hit it! In fact!!! I have never run over a cat!
I have hit a few deer though,,or should I say , they hit me.
If you loved your pet cat as much as you say,, you would not let it run the roads, neighbors yards, chicken coops, barns and you would collar it.
The cat in question was not collared, it ran out in front of me, it was obviously no ones pet, and it was headed for my friends yard! Hey I took a shot and missed.
This friend of mine has had several chicks and chickens killed and stolen by rascals in the past few weeks...Just trying to be a good neighbor.

I'll do all I can to not hit a dog (even an uncollared one),,, same for a deer, cause they just tear things up.

A couple of months ago I saw a pickup truck driver flip his truck over in a ditch,,,he was trying to avoid hitting a buzzard that was having breakfast in the middle of the road, I don't think anyone was seriously hurt, but you get my drift. A 55 MPH hwy is no place for a buzzard or a chicken killin' feral cat! I will not swirv to miss either.
Not everyone likes cats,, they are ,,in my opinion, evil creatures. Don't let them around your infant children,,,they will suck the very life breath from their lungs!

Just send all your hate mail to me!

Shenandoah Valley, VA

Good grief. Do you also believe that they dance with witches on the night of the full moon? Cats don't suck babies' breath away.

And please spare me the lectures on what you assume I do with my cats. My cats don't wander the roads, kill chickens or go into neighbors yards.

Glenda, I absolutely agree that if your local animal control office is doing nothing to address the problem of feral cats, you should be calling your local government to complain.

Virginia has laws that clearly allow any property owner to deal with an animal on their property that is, in the words of the code, "worrying" or harming any kind of livestock. Killing an animal that isn't on your property and isn't bothering your livestock because you assume it is heading for someone else's critters is something else altogether.

I said before and I'll say it again, the issue isn't feral cats. It's someone assuming that because they, say, dislike cats, it's okay to try to kill them in a cruel manner. I wonder how you would feel if one of your neighbors felt that way about ridding the neighborhood of dogs or chickens or turkeys that wander the roads? My neighbor up the road has chickens that are in the road just about any time I drive up that way. I hope no one is out trying to play chicken with chickens because they dislike poultry.

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

It is a very sad thing that people don't take care of their animals. I've met many "educated" people who think it's ok to leave their cats when they move because they'll (the cats) will just try to find their way back. A load of crap based on my experience. I've taken in quite a few unwanted cats and it does get expensive. Call the humane society or other agency and ask about help with costs. A vet in my area is doing a tom-a-thon where they are neutering & giving rabies shots for $10....i have a couple of cats going.
It isn't irresponsible for letting cats roam. I wish all of mine were indoor cats, but the ones i've taken in go in and out...i take care of food and water and medications but it isn't possible to round up 6 cats that were dumped and used to being outside each and every time i go in and out.
I'm sure the comment regarding "sucking the life out of children" was said in jest....that is completely and utterly false. This is also from experience as i have three young children and their lives are totally enriched by our cats and dogs and chinchillas and chickens and ducks, etc.
I have met people who run down animals and think it's funny. I'm not talking about dealing with an animal in the road and what you consider is the best way to avoid an accident, but actually running down any animal they see. This includes passengers opening doors to nail the animals...this is horrendous and a true indicator of a person's character or rather lack thereof.
Having worked with rescues for all types of animals and just reading the news there are a tremendous amount of cruel acts every day.
There are live traps that can be used to catch cats or any other animals. There are even people who trap them.
Education about animals is the best prevention. Neuter, neuter, neuter.
