Acanthus Mollis and part sun vs shade

Georgetown, SC(Zone 8a)

I caved in to temptation today and brought home a pretty good sized Acanthus. Ths spot in my garden where it would look great gets about 3-4 hours of late morning sun. From PF comments, it seems some people grow it in more sun than that with no problem and some say it will burn in that much sun.

So,..anyone in coastal SC growing Acanthus and if so, how much sun?
Any insight very much appreciated. :)
Thanks in advance!

I love the look of Acanthus, Deb, and planted one some years ago in the "Death Bed" (the one out by the river). It was nothing short of spectacular for the first two years...then it started a downward spiral. It didn't even come up this year. Pretty much a "FullShade" location. Put another one in the "Daylillly Bed" under the bird feeder...slightly more sun, proper water, it didn't even survive year 1! I wrote it off as a "Fussy Plant" that I didn't choose to deal with...It's all about microclimates...

I'm in NC-not so hot-I have moved my Acanthues 3 different times and still no bloom. It seemed to do best in the sunniest spot (Morning to early afternoon sun)

It's just too hot here in the Carolinas! It grew everywhere, freely reseeding itself in my garden on Long Island in NY. I have one struggling plant in a pot next to our garage in part shade.

The one I got in May is still in the position I described - 3 hours of late morning sun. It is still with me, but droops terribly on any day when it doesn't get watered. It also happens to be in a bed where there are pine roots and ivy.

I got a 2nd one, and put it in a similar location but in a bed with better soil (no tree roots) and it can go a couple of days without looking too thirsty.

So I think -like Tropicanna said - shade...to morning sun only is probably best for the foliage. No idea about what conditions will make it bloom. I'd think it'd need more sun to bloom but the garden center where I got the 2nd one said theirs bloom in full shade. So I still can't decide where is best. :)

GCShari: What time of year did yours bloom when you had them before "up north"?

It will light your fire if it blooms, Deb! The blooms were spectacular that one year before the decline. Haven't tried another one. Same old, same old...when in doubt, try it! If it blooms for you even once, it's well worth it, but the foliage alone is worth a try!

Bloomed in early summer. I think they rebloomed if they were deadheaded.

Gcshari: Thanks! I'll look forward to seeing them next year. :)
