Mice on feeders

Pompano Beach, FL

What's the best way to keep mice off bird feeders.
I don't want to stop feeding my birds but I really don't want any mice.

Please help

Off the feeders? Do you have a baffle on the pole?

Pompano Beach, FL

No, I don't have a baffle on the pole. I've never seen any baffles sold around my area.
Any other solutions?

Thank you

Take down the feeders for a while would be one thought.

You can buy baffles online OR find instuctions for making your own baffle. There are some people who have made their own on this forum using very simple materials.

I have seen baffles for sale at both our local Walmarts here in Tn. and at Petsmart. Have you checked those where you live?

I don't have seed feeders, but maybe you have something harmless around that you can spray, smear, wrap on the pole? Would cooking spray slow them down until you get your baffle? Guess it depends on what the pole is made of.

I wouldn't wrap anything on the pole.

What's a mouse deterrent, anyway? We have copper for snails and some plants rabbits don't like - does anything deter mice? I was thinking of just putting something at the bottom of the pole - the copper for snails made me think of it. How about a moat?

Marlton, NJ

Haha (a moat), I don't know anything besides a baffle. Maybe theirs something else thats safe to use in another part of the yard that would be safe for birds but take care of the mice. I've never had this problem (knocking on my wooden head) so its difficult to answer. Maybe the garden foes forum could suggest something to be safe to use around birds. I'll ask at another place I visit and see if they have any answers.

Well, I was grabbing at straws...or mouse tails! lol
I once had a planter that snapped together around an umbrella pole - useless thing, but it would have made a great moat!

Well just received the same answer from some other bird friends- Baffle.

Good luck Nancy! Keep us posted.

Did some googling and it seems they don't like peppermint. At least that smells good. lol

Hey how about dousing the seed with hot pepper oil?? It works on squirrels.
The birds don't mind it at all.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have heard that Cyanne Pepper works for the squirrels too.
I finally found a pic of a homemade baffle that a DGer made.

If it worked for the squirrels she had, surely it would stop your rodent problem.

Thank you for all your help.
I'm going to try the baffle. Maybe I'll try to make one.
