Corky,. not sure if this is the best method or not...but I have (as of this year) begun to pick/cut off many spots that are removable - it seems to prevent spreding if you get all of it...
there are also different treatments you can get depending on the type of spots they are (i.e. rust, scale, etc.)
I have heard of one disease that affects only certain epis and creates black spots that eventually grow into rot/dry patch places, apparently there is controversy over exactly what it is, but many people I have talked to seem to think it is a virus and this particular type does not seem to be treatable.
Depending on what you have it may be a good idea to cut off the afflicted leaves so it does not spread.
