I saw a bird in our yard today and can't figure out, so far, what it might have been. I don't have a digital camera so can't attach a photo.
It resemled a RBW except it seemed a little stockier, more of a dingy sort of brownish / tannish coloring where a RBW would be white, brown instead of black on the back feathers, the red was a big red spot on the back like the HW or DW. It also had a black patch on it's breast area. We see our RBW's everyday and this was clearly not one of our regulars!
This bird also was foraging on the ground and on the trees, which I have seen RHW do, but not the RBW.
Any help would be appreciated since I am keeping a journal of sorts and write down all the birds I see here.
Also had our first Oriole today here not sure which yet, and spotted one of the Bald Eagles that live down by the lake!! That thing was HUGE!!!!!
CLOSED: Any guesses?
Have a look at Northern Flickers
Your description has me a little confused but how about a Northern Flicker?
