I think Veronica nailed it, Agarita or Agarito, a very nice plant to have.
oH wow Am I lucky or what... Thanks guys.. I've located three on the property. I'll make sure HB doesn't clear them. will look for more....too
Wonderful, they grow very slowly, so treasure them. You are a lucky person.
Josephine.
Yes, that's it. And the red berries are edible..very tasty when they're ripe.
I guess when they were blooming I just wasn't out and about looking enough. I think I'm a lucky lucky lady. I'm going to do some more hunting on property and try to start them up here around house ( so far they ones I've found are on other side of three acres). I'm definitely going to try the drink and if i like that will go for jelly. Neat too that they are deer resistant. Always like something that I can enjoy more than them. I love them, don't get me wrong, however, I really prefer to enjoy them waay out front and not in my flower and veggie beds. They are behaving right now but I'm sure it'll be different when it's hotter and dryer. They do like the pond as well as the plants and I'm sure that's part of the attraction. It's going to be an interesting summer of gardening!!! So many projects for my new tx garden!!
I read an article in Neil Sperry's Texas Gardener about deer and gardens. Apparently, deer don't like jumping into small areas. So if putting up an 8' fence doesn't appeal to you, try dividing the yard into small gardens with short 4' fences (A good place for vines). They need to be able to look in to see that the space is small for this to be effective. Or get a largish dog. They have a healthy respect for dogs. They would probably laugh at a chihuahua or dachshund though. The article discussed several possible solutions, including those based on coyote urine, motion sensing sprayers, etc., but the conclusion was except for the high fence, small fence spaces or dogs, all others were just temporary.
I haven't had a problem with deer although they are all over our pastures because my husband's dog, Blue, is very territorial and won't let them near.
Great idea - actually have a poodle that loves to bark and chase LOL so funny to watch but she can make them scatter. Of course nitetime is a problem. However my wonderful neighbor has dug a huge tank filled with water and fish and noticed now that he has a deer feeder fairly close to it. Set himself up with chairs under some trees just within watching distance. So I be thats they are behaving & I get to watch the deer cross my property and go visit him. I get the best of both worlds. Hopefully its gonna fix the majority of my problem. We've used deer away on perimeter of garden area and supposedly it sorta "trains" the deer to go around. We talked that would be good until the only green is the garden then what? Hopefully the feeder is more attrative. He also has garden so we'll see how it works when it's hot & dry.
I made it to Schumackers yesterday and loved it!!! Bought several things and made a list for more. Also they had several Agaritas - so if I can't get some started up here close to house I know where to buy. They were very reasonable too. Chip wasn't there but everyone was really nice and helpful!!! Great place - on my list for regular stops.
