I think I am doing something wrong?

Hi AV experts and lovers. I'm fairly new to AV's and mine seem to be doing well, but after viewing all the beautiful pictures of everybody elses AV's I am seeing a difference.
Mine are "bushy" --- lots of leaves and they don't lie flat. I have them under great lights and they flower alot, and are green. But how do you get them to lie flat? And do I need to thin out some of the growth?

I have no idea. They sound lovely. Maybe you could post some pictures - it sounds like you might have suckers.

I would send a picture but I don't know how to send them.

if you have your pictures on your computer, you simply go to the browse button at the bottom of your post, find the right picture ( your pictures should open when you click browse.....) When you find the right picture, left click on the picture, then there should be an OK on your computer where the picture is opened......then simply left click on preview of your post..
If you want to get your picture first and then write what you want, just left click preview again....say what you want, click preview again and then send the picture with your message. You can only upload one photo to a post.....but all you do to post another picture is simply post a reply to your post....
am I clear as mud????

Rustywoman: Sounds like some of mine that need Surgery! I have a few that are bushy with lots of suckers that really need to be removed and potted up. Here's a pic of a Bushy AV with no name, I'm almost embarassed to show how bad it looks, but here goes:

Well ... I'm not a good AV Mommy right now ... here's another one that needs work .... I think this is an Optimara 'Annabelle'

Lin, I have decided that Annabelle is never going to lay flat..........I have worked so hard on her, even putting a ring on her, but she likes to climb to the sky (LOL)
Every time i try to do surgery I make it worse, so some of mine have double crowns............... I am so envious of people who actually know how to groom a plant properly.

Can I slip something in? My Annabell and Isabelle don't lay flat. The reach hands to the heavens all the time. I think it is just the way they are.

Oh boy!

Thanks everyone for your help. I will have to try to figure out the picture thing. Gessiegail, I am so electronic illiterate. I can't even program the DVD. I need to keep up with the times.
I know that there is only 1 plant per pot plantlady because (gasp) they have a neck. I am feeling worse by the second. They are lush and flower all the time. I was waiting until they took a break to re-pot them. I think yours look great. Healthy. Happy.
I am going to have to experiment with "grooming" I guess. And read up alot more. I know that they shouldn't look like they do.
I have 6 babies I bought from a website and it is interesting to see them (all on the same plate) and under the same light, yet growing differently. Most are laying flat but the Ness Orange pekoe is standing up. Hmmm?

Well, I better get to work!! Thanks again

I agree, I think Annabelle & Isabelle are just types of AV's that are always going to be reaching! I've had a couple of people tell me they are "reaching" for the light ... that they need more light and someone else said it was because they were not rotated, that I needed to turn them every once in awhile. Well, they are under grow lights and just seem to want to grow tall, with lots of suckers! Too much trouble to worry about in my opinion! If they want to grow that way, so be it.

Rustywoman: If yours that are Bushy are blooming and looking great, I would just enjoy them as they are. It's so hard for me to take a perfectly beautiful blooming plant and cut it up!

Thanks, I already feel better about them. When I get a few more babies from them, then I will experiment. But I am worried I'll kill it!
