Butterflies vs Snails

Perris, CA(Zone 9a)

Hi! Everybody!! I was reading the book Butterfly Garden: Creating Summer Magic in your Garden last night. It is an excellent book but it stumped me on something that was written in it. In the book, it said if you wanted butterflies you have to forego the slug pellets. For years I have been using snail and slug pellets regularly as we have snails and slugs in epidemic proportions. Have I been inadvertently discouraging some (definitely not all) butterflies and other insects from visiting my garden? My wife once tried beer in a saucer in just a corner of our garden and the first night there was six slugs drowned. Please advise...

Thanks,

Chuck

Hmmmm .... not heard that before. But .... if you want moths, many of them do pupate in the soil. Is it possible that the pellet poison leeches into the roots of the plants and up into the leaves? Making it a killer for any cats?

Don't know. Good question Don! I have moles that take care of my grubs (and possibly slugs). LOL! I have the tunnels ALL over my backyard! The beer idea I have heard before. Might go ahead and try that myself! :-)

Have heard you can put a dish of beer out in your flower bed and the buggers will crawl in and drown. Not sure what else that will attract or if you'll create some alcoholic 'possums or 'coons?! I don't use anything for slugs and snails out here...but then again...I don't get them in epidemic proportions either. Do find one or two every now and then at the bottom of the bird bath though :o)
