Hedychium in Zone 5

Northeast Harbor, ME

Can I plant my Hedychium in the garden and pull up the roots and store them inside for the winter? I'd love to try them in the ground but don't know if they'll suffer too much from digging them up in the fall.

You sure can. Just cut back on the water when you bring them inside, and leave foliage on the plant until spring. I wintered a few last year in a sunny downstairs window and all were sprouting by springtime. I left the new growth and cut back the old.

Good luck!
