Someone told me yes but I did not think this is the case. I have musa basjoo, orinoco, and chinese yellow banana growing. The musa basjoo was the only one that I had planted last year and it reached nearly 10 ft by summers end but no flower.
Thanks!
Do you need more than one banana to get fruit?
thanks dale..i thought so but just wanted to be sure. now i can go and say seeeeeee, i told you so!!! :-)
Mystic;
Banana usually will produce fruits when they're mature. That takes at least two years of growth under ideal condition. e.g. continous, long hot periods of growth. They will not have that ideal condition in our zones. Unless, you can some how simulate that. An idea that may work. Grow one in large half-whiskey-barrel. (perrerably with a set of wheels). Give it all the sunshine it needs during the growing season. Then bring them inside, continue to provide lots of artificial lights, and warm. Then promptly return it outdoors next season. I've received 1 year old + banana. Planted outdoor and it produced flower, and fruits. It's fun to watch the flower stalk unveal its tiny little fruits and grew. But I can tell ya. One short season growth, the fruits didn't fully develop. And you know the rest of the story.....they got nipped by frost. I didn't give up on growing banana in my zone. They DO however, survive our winter outdoors, with heavily mulch. New offsprings will return each year. And I'm happy at least I can have them as perennuals in our climate.
