It didn't have a name, but one of the ladies said the name that started with a P????
I don't know the name of this one???
Begonia prismatocarpa, a terrarium type of low growing begonia. I grow a variegated version =º)
why would they be selling this at an AV sale??? Do they just do that sometimes?
I suppose so, it's not uncommon for us to see 'companion' plants at our local AV sale. Sometimes members do 'display' gardens (or maybe they are called Dish gardens) that have both AV's, Streps and other 'mini' plants all artfully arranged - others I've seen are ficus quercifolia (Rob's sells lots of 'little' plants like this)

Here's a link to their 'kit' page http://www.robsviolet.com/dish_garden_kits.htm
Some that I have seen at judged shows are very sweet, like a mini lush landscape.
This little plant is precious....thanks for the websites....
While I have you on line, could you tell me why rex begonias 'hate' me??? I can grow most any plant but these I am failing badly......................They have pretty foliage, but it seems that every day I go out and pick off the dead leaves....I have the crowns really high in the soil. Could that be a problem. I bought them in those same pots...............I am tempted to use bulb pans and change the soil just to see if they get healthier.
thanks
gail
Here's a recipe page for begonia soil blends http://cutebassethounds.com/begonia_web/images/soil_recipes_sac_ABS.jpg
I like 'Joan's Mix' the best and do my own version of that omitting several things (we can't seem to find Leaf mold here in Cali any more)
(more links to begonia stuff on my web page http://cutebassethounds.com/begonia_web/begonia_links.html )
Rexies don't like dry air, so humidity is pretty important if you can, and they don't like wet feet so well draining soil is a must. Other than that, dappled light or shade out side and inside I treat them about the same as my gessies and AV's and grow them in plant stands under lights.
For those that I grow in terrariums, I was taught to get long fiber sphagnum, get it moist and then wring it out, and dredge it in your soil blend (I use my AV blend of 30/30/30 perlite, peat and vermiculite) and then plunk your rexie babies in that mix in a jar or bowl. (you may want to try this method with a 2" snip of your new B. prismatocarpa in a small covered jar or bowl)
Bulb pans are a great idea as they have shallow roots like AV's. Hang in there and keep trying! It took me a while to get a recipe and system down in our bone dry weather. But hopefully you'll find your recipe the way you have for your AV's!!
And did you know there is a terrarium forum!!! lots of fun. http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/terrariums/
hi begoniacrazii !! I was just wondering how you were - should've known all I needed to do was post a begonia pic in the AV forum. LOL.
Once I have a misting system up (it's never gonna happen) I swear I am going to try a begonia mounted on treefern!
Gail,
Don't feel too badly about not doing well with rexes, I grew all types begonias for years. I never did get the hang of growing them well.
I've learned to do 2 different things that might help in addition to what begoniacrazii mentioned...try them in a terrarium ( hoping to hook Gail on terrariums too), and try them in a self watering AV pot. It made a big difference for me. For the most part I grow them in terrariums but Av's are so much easier for me I don't grow many of them anymore.
Nice to see you begoniacrazii!
MsC
thanks for all of the above help.....I am defintely going to try a new mixture of soil.....and try a couple in the bubble jars....the ladies in CC said they buy those bubble vases at Hobby Lobby for almost nothing....thanks again
all the fun is in experimenting, because when you hit on the combo that works for you, in your home or unique environment, then it's pure pleasure.
I keep my rexies pretty moist but the soil is so porous that they seem to not mind the moisture so long as they have lots of air pockets in the soil (from the chunky perlite and bark). One caveat - I don't water mine in the winter as they are in the greenhouse and go into a somewhat dormant state. But they are all sprouting out now.
ALSO, I forgot to mention that using clay pots for rexies helps too, as the clay evaporates it creates some humidity and also wicks away excess moisture.
MsC, so nice to see you too, What? Not in Arizona any more? You must have missed good ol' Texas!
Hiya Key! You know me, I can sniff out a begonia from a mile away or in this case a few thousand miles! You should set up that misting system!! And then post your photos!!!
clay pots is a wonderful idea!!!!!
Love the terrarium plants. Very Cheery
Gail, it seems the clay pots do work well on Rexes. I only have one ('Capricorn') because it takes up so much room. I do really like them though and admire them wherever I see them. Mine grows in natural light in my large dining room window...bright but no sun to speak of. It's in an 8" squatty clay pot now and could use going up to a 10".
this isn't fair, Snowrose......................you can grow anything..............that is exactly what I would like for mine to look like....
I am going to copy you in the squatty clay pots.....and also keep in the house. It is just too hot down here for them to be very happy outside............already in the 90's every day.
