My favorite

Springfield, MO(Zone 6a)

I've been asked many times what my favorite Bromeliad is. I usually answer that I don't have one, but if I did this would probably be it. This is Guzmania sanguinea. It comes in several clones and the coloration varies with the light. In past years the color has been more splotched with yellow, and this year's red is intense. The picture does not do it justice.

G. sanguinea is easy to grow but it is an "upper pupper" like Vriesea splendens which means that it only produces a single pup right in the middle of the plant. This plant has bloomed many times and was getting leggy. Gritting my teeth a few years ago, I very carefully took off the central pup leaving much of the mother plant intact. It was messy but I was successful and here it is two years later.

Happy Spring all.
Dave.

Here it is the last time it bloomed with more yellow. I think I prefer it this way presumably with less light though I'm not sure I remember.
