I put all the names on Kodak Share and then realized i couldn't share that way on Dave's site...but they do have names
New streps from Corpus Christi AV sale
WOW....what beauties they are, you are so very lucky to have found them!!!
So many beautiful well established blooming streps! I recognize several but would like to know what the first red one is and the last one you said was your favorite. Must have been a blast getting all of them. A truly lucky day I would say.
The pink one is 'Thumbelina' (Ford)
The first one is 'Hera' (Ogilvee)
I am trying to give away leaves.....want some??? The Hera is described as carmine red.....that is a pretty accurate description of the color.
It was sooooooooooo much fun and I loved all the ladies there....in fact several of them knew my brother (he never left home except for college) so I felt right at home.
Sure! I thought that might have been 'Hera' but wasn't sure. Oglevee's tend to be very good sturdy growers and reliable bloomers. I have a collection of them but don't have Hera. 'Thumbelina' is a doll. They all are very nice!
OK...sounds good...I will add that variegated one. I posted it somewhere else, but it is awesome!!!
I would rather play on DG or with my plants, but I have a long meeting....gone!!!
Gail, they are all beautiful. Did these all come from an av sale? I'm curious how much they charged for each plant? They look great. I really love streps, much more than av's. They are so much easier to get to bloom.
I hate to tell you but all the big streps were 7.00, the big bubbles I showed with at least 7 or 8 blooming episcias were 8.00....nothing in the whole sale costs more than 10.00......I even bought 'Dresden Doll' for 6.50 with 4 crowns in it!!!!!
They were bargains that is for sure........
I have decided the best way to buy plants is at these AV sales and shows.....Join the local chapter and then join national....it would be worth a weekend trip just to buy these awesome plants for a lot less than ordering them....plus they are 5 times the size of the ones you get when ordering.
I've forgotten where you asked if all av sales have plants set up for wicking.... No, but may people who propagate for sales wick the plants because otherwise it is just a lot of work watering them on schedule. Set up a flat or two with a shared reservoir and tada! they get exactly as much water as they need. The trick with wicking different types of plants is to adjust the soil mix (more/less perlite) to suit the plant.
I love DG....so much good helpful information, Keyring....I never even thought of using all my permanest trays with the same kind of plant in each one......(needing the same soil mix)...

I have so many streps which will produce seed (old ones)...is it worthwhile to learn to collect the seeds??? I carefully pulled the blooms off and now waiting for the pods to open?????? How would you collect them??
To grow from seed, wait until the long, twisted seed pod turns dry and brown. You can then sow the seeds immediately on top of your soil-less mix.
Streptocarpus means "twisted fruit", referring to the slender, twisted seed capsule that the plants produce.
Is it worthwhile? It is just for the experience but I think choosing varieties with good qualities you like is more worth your time and space.
Sounds like a good plan to me. At some point we all run out of space...
thanks
