Anyone Know about growimg Venus Flytrap?
Venus Flytrap is not a tropical... I checked and DG does have a Carnivorous Plants forum http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/redmeatoffthebone/all/ so you should ask there.
Short answer: I think it would not like standing in water - that might be too much for it. They need to be kept constantly moist but they are not aquatic plants. I have had one for about 6 years now. It's in full sun, planted in a plastic pot w/attached saucer, growing medium is a mix of 2/3 peat moss : 1/3 coarse sand. All I do is keep it watered and every spring remove the dead foliage before it starts to grow again - it feeds itself.
Full sun, stand in a tray with about an inch of water in it. DISTILLED OR RAINWATER ONLY. Tap water will kill them. No feeding needed. Soil can be either 50/50 of peat moss and perlite or peat moss and sand. They need a dormant period of about 5 months, no cooler than 40 degrees F. I put mine in the refridgerator.

Well, assuming we're talking about Dionaea muscipula, it's pretty tough. I've watered mine with the hose for years, hasn't killed it yet. They stay on the deck all year - summer temps as high as 100F, winter as cold as 10F. Supposedly cold-hardy to zone 6 or maybe even 5.
I'll bet a lot of us tropical folks have at least tried Venus Flytraps once or twice...
Thank you for the interesting thread Dimmer.
