Growing info? B. vulcanicola, Super Spot, x flava 'lilac'?

San Diego & San Fran, CA(Zone 10a)

I'd be interested to know anyone's first hand knowledge or hearsay or anything regarding these plants - esp vulcanicola and lilac. I think Super Spot is probably easy. I've no grown them before!

I think two that you mentioned (super spot and Lilac)are not in this country that I know of. I also don't think many have grown vulcanicola. I would guess superspot would be the easiest if you can get it in the US.

I bought "Lilac 1" from Anne Kirchner in Germany this spring, she is the hybridiser for this one. She says its very prone to get virus so advice is never to overwinter them with other brugs, other then that just the usuall growing conditions as for most brugs.
Oh and dont forget the 1 after Lilac its "Lilac 1"

Super Spot is easy to grow. Like other Brugmansia, Super Spot prefer a well drained soil. It grows to a small tree or bush, which grow more in the width, than in the height and it is a real heavy bloomer.

Brugmansia x flava 'Lilac' is a Hans-Georg Preissel plant bred at the Herrenhauser Gardens.

I thought that "Lilac 1" andf "Lilac 2" were working names for seedlings, of which one (?Lilac 1) was selected and properly named 'Lilac' (see Preissel & Preissel, Brugmansia and Datura (english ed.) p. 85.).

But Janett if you say that 'Lilac1' is an Anne Kirchner-Abel plant then maybe I have this wrong!

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

When I ordered this Brug some months ago I found info on the net that this one was an Anne Kirchner-Abel cross but as much on the net it could be wrong so I cant say its written in stone BUT I did buy it from Anne Kirchner-Abel tagged as Lilac 1.

go to the online-shop and look under the button Engelstrompeten.

Also check out another beauty under Neuzüchtungen , then go to Neuzüchtungen und neuheiten 2006.
Check Brugmansia-vulcanicola-Hybride 'Mystic Fire' that is a beauty I want when its released.

Thanks for the ifo so far guys! The "lilac" I am asking about is the B. x flava 'lilac' (not lilac 1 or lilac 2). Any info on the xflava 'lilac'? And why do people find the B. vulcaicola to be difficult? I ask because I have heard they are difficult and that they like cool weather like sanguinea. However, no one mentions how they lost their vulcanicola - stuff to look out for and so forth.

I only have a couple Brugs (arborea, sanguinea and a very very mystifying 'Frosty Pink' that was given to me and I like it even though it's not very unusual!) So growing advise is much appreciated.

You may have a difficult time getting growing information from personal experience. Ulrike and Hans-Georg Preissel state that B. vulcanicola "is probably the rarest of all the Angel's Trumpets" even in its native Columbia where they grow at an altitude between 9800 - 11,550 feet. They also state that it is difficult to grow because it is particularly sensitive to "moisture in the planting mix." According to what I have read( and there's not much available) they prefer cool growing conditions, hate and will not bloom in hot weather. If they are like B. sanguinea, who drop dead at the drop of a hat in warm to hot weather, they will grow in San Francisco and that's about it.

Wow thanks for that. I really appreciate it. So keep vulcanicola dry. That is really very helpful. Thanks for the info!

I have grown the pink vulcanicola that the San Francisco Arboretum claims is the real one. It has been questioned and may be a hybrid. It grew great but got virused or had a latent virus when I got it. The ones at the Arboretum are virused too.

My huge sang got virused, I believe caught it from the vulcanicola and yellow sang I brought in. My arborea didn't catch it and it keeps on growing. It is huge now and flowers right thru December. In the big freeze here I lost many brugs but the arborea just got a bit burned but recovered very fast. It has the best fragrance of all my brugs.

They all lived thru our wet season fine and our dry season. I think the secret is the cool nights even in the summer. They love that. But other friends who grow these also complain that they catch viruses very fast, after 2 or 3 years.

Here are some pictures of virused sangs.

Kell - Yeah I saw those sources from Strybing for sale on ebay at one point. They are pretty though - even if they are maybe not correct. It is too bad about these viruses. I have an idea I will get caught up in that since my space is small and all. Thanks for your posts on both my questions. I really appreciate you taking the time!

Janet -

We should get that 'Mystic Fire'! This hybridizer has some beautiful cv's. Thanks for sharing the images.

OH yes Ellie, we definately NEED that one :0)
I bought "Super Spot" from a nursery thanks to you the other day :0) judging by the picture in the nursery also a gorgeous one, The hybridizer for this one is Anne Kirchner-Abel and its also listed under the PDF file link I will have further down. they sadly have it listed as one word grrrr but on her site its two words

Regading the Lilac or Lilac 1 I have e-mailed Anne K and hopefully I will get an answer about the number 1. I will not give up as I hate misslabeled plant as it creates havock along the line all over the net for people that really want to know what they got.
You are half right Alistair. the B .Flava "Lilac" is listed as a cultivar of (hybridizer) Herrenhauser Garten not as a Preissel.

LOL I think your source is half right too Janett. Preissel was the director of HG since 1984.

I think a plant can be bred at a garden, but not by it.... :-)

But we are arriving at the same or very similar point of origin one way or another!!

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

LOL thats why I said that you where half right hehe I knew about Preissel and Herrenhauser.

On a more serious note, why cant a cultivar be registered under a company/nursery7gardens name if there are several people putting their heads together to make a new cultivar and they all are equally involved and deserving of the credit for it, wouldnt it be more fair to have it registered under the company name then?
makes me wonder........is it Pressel single handed or was it his more people involved.

Yes I think if, for example, it was developed by someone as part of their job, that the "ownership" would be the organisation as much as the person. Its a bit ambiguous at times..... But at least for historical purposes it is probably more useful to specify the person. At least with botanical organisations I suspect many projects are driven by the interests of the individual people rather than (or as much as) the organisation specifing its priorities and forcing people to be interested in them.

I'm growing out seeds from Engelstrompeten X Lilac 1 cross...the seedlings seem very strong and carefree growers.. at about 8" a month in the first few months.. no flowers yet after 2 1/2 months... what might I be doing wrong... Gordon

Gamleby, Sweden(Zone 7a)

LOL judging by previous picture you posted in this forum I dont think you are doing anything "wrong" except being like the rest of us....want to see the result preferably yesterday :0)
Did you buy your seeds from dergartner on E-bay?
Its going to be fun to see what beautys they will produce...good luck.

I think they might be slow growers. I was told the "lilac" I was asking about was. And seeing as how it was debatable if I was talking about the same cv maybe they are or are closely related. So it might be kinda normal for them to be slow. I hope you post images when you get em blooming though!
