How do I get rid of it?
bamboo
Hey neighbor! I'm just down the road.
I used a pick and shovel and lots of persistence... you might want to use some roundup, too. Here's a couple links:

Thanks for the hyperlinks. Now off to Home Depot for a pick and shovel. Do you know where I can buy Vinegar 10%?
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/32028/index.html If you mean this stuff....good luck! I have been battling this stuff for 30+ years. I now just deal with it when it is in my way. Cut it down, dig it up. If I ever move into another house I will make sure it is no where near my yard.I didn't care if it is the home of my dearms and they were giving it away.
One positive note, if you let the canes dry and throw them in the brush pile to burn they make a real loud popping sound, great for a 4th of July bonfire.

Oh boy, I hope you're not dealing with the plant ladygardener1 is talking about...
Some feed stores like agway will have 20% acetic acid (vinegar) and you can add water to weaken it to 10%. If you can find pickling vinegar in a grocery store, that's supposed to be 10% strength.
We can always count on Chris to look at the positive in a bad situation. You are very special Chris. Take pics of your 4th of July bonfire please. ha-ha
You are such a cutie. Good way to start my Monday morning.

I'm sitting here trembling...I just planted P. cuspidatum 'Crimson Beauty' - it's supposedly not invasive like other types of bamboo...pics of it sure are pretty!!
Bamboo?!? That word sends shivers down my spine. There is a thread over on GardenWeb where I and other have posted war stories about bamboo.

OMG, Brent....ok....in the fetal position now - going to read the threads...
I have no info on Polygonum cuspidatum...though web search hits on the cultivar 'Crimson Beauty' seem positive. The bamboo that I have battled was Phyllostachys...maybe this one: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/1365/index.html

Ok...so I feel a little better now...
Here's the links to the one I planted: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/57524/index.html
And the plant file page for it: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/57524/index.html
Plygonum cuspidatum would be mostly a wild invasive one- I don't 'think' anybody sells it. It's all over here in moist places in the woods edges.
