Killing mites

What product is best to use to get rid of mites?

Dripping Springs, TX(Zone 8b)

Good Luck. I generaly controll them with by spraying neem. and additional spray of seaweed extract also seems to helpI also dislodge them by spraying water on the underside of leaves. But so far nothing has completely eradicated them. I have heard good things about forbid. I have used kelthane, pentac, and various other products but they are toxic and dont seem to controll them any better than organic methods. so I have reverted back to organics. spider mites it seems are just part of life for me.especially in my green house. outside they arent much of a problem untill summer when it gets real dry.

Last year I took Kell's advice and used Neem and backed it up with Bayer's 2 in 1 for roses. It was a big job, but it worked with no damage, unless I used too much 2 in 1.
This year I've held them off till now with Shultz Rose & Flower spray.. but I missed a few and started to see mites... so I brought out the big guns last week.. (Forbid) I must have sprayed some brugs twice cause I totally fried new growth on several brugs. No mites anywhere.. which is good.. but the brugs I cooked with it are much worse off than they were. The leaves look like a severe broad mite infestation, and chewed to nothing.. it's awful. So although I am pleased with the results on the brugs I lightly misted with it.. I'm sick that I destroyed some with it.

Avid and Forbid.

The thread just above this one is a really good example of mite damage. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/722210/ So sad to see, cause it's such a drag to fight them!

ZZ, spray your brugs. late afternoon once the sun will not shine on them until the following day. If you are an early riser, spray several hours before the sun hits the leaves. The latter is never an option for me as I have yet to turn over at such an hour. The early bird can have the worm. Lol

Some discussion about using biological control here....

Much more effective agains spider mites than spraying, at least under certain conditions....

I have used Avid & Forbid, both are excellent for all mite control.

Forbid takes care of mite eggs also.

AVID or FORBID
Forget the other stuff!

A shotgun with birdshot. No mites. No brugs. No problems.

where do you get avid and forbid

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Don't you just hate mites Barbara? They truly just about ruin growing brugs.

I use Neem myself almost double strength for small outbreaks. The negative is that you have to cover every square inch of the leaves for it works by smothering. The positive is it won't kill you and the mites do not mutate to get used to it.

Avid already in California does not work well, the mites have gotten used to it. Last year I had such a bad outbreak of mites I bought Forbid. It was brand new on the market so the mites didn't have a chance to mutate yet. It was so expensive I also bought a vaporizer to apply it. It was fantastic. Used very little of theForbid and I did my whole yard and the mites were gone after just one fogging. It also was not too toxic to humans. I got Forbid a bit cheaper on eBay.

If you have a neighbor or friend have them go in with you for the Forbid. It's very pricey, and a bottle will last for years if you have to use it all yourself. By the time you're half way through with it they might have something better. Ebay does have the best prices on it.

I'm growing some Flavas, and mites find them absolutely delicious!
I use a mix of 1/4 cup Murphy's Oil Soap to a full Miracle grow sprayer of water.
I follow up with a full inspection every few days. If I see anything suspicious, I brush them off with a 3" paintbrush.

Liz,

You said anything suspicious you brush off with a paint brush. Are talking about spider mites or broad mites?

Both.

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

www.rosemania.com has both..and other items to use with them.. like the phermones to get the mites active so they encounter the killers.. even if youdidn't hit them right off.. Gordon
