Light Frost

La Salle, MI(Zone 5b)

Well we got a light frost here last night, Ken came in the bedroom last night and said frost warnings, should of seen me out there covering some of my stuff up at midnight. My neighbor thought I was nuts, he was working on a car but was nice enough to turn his flood light on for me. He just planted out all his maters & peppers a couple nights ago. Said he would take a chance on it.
Thank God I hadn't planted my garden yet, all my veggies & plants are in my gh and the ones that has come up I got covered. Hope this is the end of it... I plan on planting out tomorrow.

Happy Gardening

Hi Connie,

It got down to 31 degrees here in AuGres last night. It may have even been colder than that. My outside temperature control is on the deck ledge right up next to the house. The only thing I covered up yesterday was my heavenly blue morning glory seedlings that had just came up. The rest of my flowers and vegetables are still tucked safely in the garage and they're going to stay there until Memorial weekend. I probably could go ahead and put in the broccoli and cabbage since they can take a light frost but tomatoes and peppers need HEAT and will suffer transplant shock if you put them in the ground before the soil is a certain temperature. It will set them back. I've read it's best to wait till the soil warms up. The plants actually grow faster than if you put them in early and it's too cold for them. It's like you trying to get over the flu or something. You have to recover before you can go back to your daily work and functions.

I've played that running out and covering up everything game before and having the whole neighborhood laughing. It's too much work. I think that late snow we had set the tone for more late frosts here. It is supposed to be cold at night every night up until about Friday I think. I check Accuvue weather report on the internet. They give the forecast for a couple weeks ahead of time. I knew we were due for a cold spell this week and that is why everything is still in the garage. I do plan to plant my poppy seeds today though if I get time since they need a frost to germinate.

Boy am i glad I don't grow veggies.

I didn't see any frost this morning... But i say, if it can't handle the Michigan Spring... it doesn't deserve to live here! ;)

Loon the only thing I covered the other night was the plants that were in my raised bed I did last year that had come up. didn't want to take a chance on losing them. Also a few plants that came up around the house like my bleeding hearts and my butterfly bush (its about 2 inches high), I did plant out a morning glory and some lupine next to dh garage and forgot all about them :( I hope the frost didn't get them, I don't have any more seeds for either of those. Also the plants that sitting on my front deck. I'm not planting anything out til the 1st of June. But I am going to start getting all the beds ready now tho. Went to lowes Saturday and ended up buying 60 bags of top soil. I got the 99 cent bags. I have a really low spot next to my privacy fence that is low and takes for ever to drain. Going to be working on that today and a couple other places. Moving the gh to the back yard where it gets the am sun and pm shade. Good thing its portable :o) dh is going to help me move it so I don't have to take it apart and then he is going to stake it down so the wind won't blow it away. this is the one I have http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=329264

Didn't get any frost last night, thank goodness. Have a good day,

Connie, that is a really nice greenhouse. It looks like it wouldn't be too hard to move also. We didn't get any frost last night either. It's raining a lot here this morning though. Good for the flowers.

I didn't cover up my perennials that were up and they all seemed fine. Perennials are pretty tough I think and used to cold temperatures. I won't baby too much. If it can't fend for itself it's out of here. :)

We're supposed to get hail and high winds in our area...Did'nt know about a frost either alls looking good here!!!

Melvindale, MI(Zone 5a)

I didn't hear about the hail thing. Storms I know we are getting. We need a little rain. Once a week is fine with me, that way I don't have to water.
