Yellowing leaves on Hibiscus

Ocala, FL

I live in central Florida - zone 9a/8b and have three yellow hibiscus. Every morning for the past few weeks I have discovered completely yellow leaves here and there on each plant. It is blooming and the other leaves are deep green. What's going on? I do notice that they get hit with aphids around the buds periodically and I've sprayed with insecticial soap - seem to be under control - I think. Also interested in perhaps training them into standards. Need info. on this please. By the way the are yellow with yellow throated flowers.

Have you moved them recently? Whenever I move mine around, they tend to do that where some of the leaves will turn yellow and eventually fall off. If it was another plant other than hibiscus my first guess would be overwatering though so you might want to consider that too if the plants haven't been moved recently.

Hi jjnbabe

Lots of thing make yellow leaves on hibs. Too much water, not enough water, a change in environment, bugs etc. Also they will loose yellow leaves normally since they are an evergreen plant. If the yellowing is mottled yellow and green that's usually spider mites. Solid yellow is more of a water or environment issue. Burnt around the edges is a chemical burn or feeding when they were dry.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info. - sounds like perhaps it's a water issue. They bloom lovely but they are in the back of a bed that has other plants that need good moisture. It's so dry here in Florida right now that I am watering just so they all survive Spring.

Good morning jjnbabe

All of my hibiscus do that very same thing. I haven't change my watering pattern in over a year, each plant still gets some yellow leaves and they fall off or I pick 'em. Most of the hibiscus around this area do it too..I think David is right, a normal condition. It has been extremely dry here in Cayman, we got our first rain in months just yesterday...hopefully the rainy season is here and I can cut down on the manual watering for a while...

Post some pics of your hibinkos...I have a couple of yellows too!!!
