Al, thanks for suggesting scale as the source of the problem with my ficus. Indeed, after reading your reply, I examined the tree and sure enough that's exactly the problem. Strange that I didn't see the scales when the tree was inside. I guess these eyes aren't what they used to be . . . Jackie
