Great Blue Heron warning: 19 photos!!

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Considering I took 195 pics today, I guess posting 19 isn't too bad!! It was one of those exciting times - not all of these are great clearest of images, but the postures are worth looking at (at least in my humble opinion!).

It started off with this gorgeous creature fishing, then some "liftoff" photos as he went from one side of the dock to the other, then his return trip (the landing mainly).

Hope you enjoy them - and at least I warned you in the subject line!

He's after it . . .

He's gettin' it!

Speared it!

He walked to the sandy portion of the shore and put it down, then picked it up so he could eat it (hard to do when you spear things with both parts of your beak!)

It's a big mouthful!!

That's a long passage to his belly! Hard to believe that's the same skinny neck in photo #1.

Changed directions, but still in his throat.

Lift off (I think I was annoying him).

He's gettin' there.

After a short while on the other side, I guess I again annoyed him and he returned to his original spot.

Murmur, an absolutly fabulous set of photos. You captured so many really great shots.

As long as there is good action keep shooting. I believe that is our unofficial motto.

Great motto, Gary! And I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to see eagles and herons on such a regular basis - not to mention the backyard birds!

Thanks to both of you for your kind words.

Interesting collection for sure...thanks for taking the time to upload them for us to see!

Great pictures. I love watching these in our swamp. They are great fisher....um...birds. When they catch the bullheads, they need to snap off the pokers that stick out each side by the gill before swallowing. They will rap the fish on a stump to break them off, then down they go. Sometimes drinking lots of water helps the slide, if it is a large fish.
Looking at your pictures is just like watching through the spotting scope.

Looks like a flatfish . . . tricky shape for a heron to swallow!

Seemed to have no problem though! Usually after eating, the ones I have seen, preen for quite a while.
I love seeing them stick out that ostrich type feather on the back of their head.
