Houston Storm

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, my side of town got 5.82 inches of rain in under two hours last night, according to the channel 2 news. We had lots of really big hail stones and some high winds. Our street (never in the houses, so far) floods when we get that much rain that quickly. This is twice in two weeks the streets had high water. My new plantings under the oak at street side are no more. I had pentas, lobelia, coleus, impations, geraniums and blue daze that were totally washed away. No sign of them anywhere. They were fairly recently planted, so the roots system wasn't developed enough to hold them in place. Of course, the nuts driving big SUV's through too fast making wakes that washed up into the yard didn't help. We actually had one guy in a van drive up into the yard on purpose. He then proceeded to drive down the street through all the neighbors yards. He got really close to the houses. I cannot fathom why some people think their property is more important than yours. He didn't want water in his car, so he decided to make a new road through yards! He could have easily just pulled up into a driveway rather than ruining so many people's lawn and flower beds. I have a lot of cleanup to do. Downed limbs, shredded plants that have to be trimmed back, debris to pick up. It's a mess over here. I'm so sad all my new little plants washed away :(

I am sorry, it is so upsetting when things like that happen. I hope things will recover soon.

That is terrible. Hope the weather stabilizes. That person in the van is a criminal.... can't believe someone would do that.

Best wishes,

I am so sorry your plants washed away and for unrespecting drivers. I wish I lived closer and I could help you clean up. I hope someone got his license plate number.

We didn't have the hail but we had the horrible thunder and lightning right over head. And I have no idea how much rain. I put out as many containers to catch it as I could. In my regular rain bucket there was a gecko drowning and I pulled him out and did my best to recessitate him
but I failed. They are so cute and he was pretty big but the rain must have caught him off guard. Some probably think the men in white coats should come and they are probably right. LOL I just blew in his mouth I did not give mouth to mouth and I worked on his little heart. I cried over this. I know it sounds pretty silly but I am an animal lover and just lost my DH in Sept. so that made it just that much more depressing as I was already down all this week. We don't have that many geckos but we have alot of lizards.

If you need any plants on my trading list just let me know and I would be glad to send them.

Hope you are having a better day today.

Crowelli...that's just terrible...about your plants and the guy driving in your yard...how rude!!!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the sympathy from everyone. I just love all the DGers on the Texas forum. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. Sometimes it just helps to vent to someone who understands how important your garden is to you. I know we were lucky that all we lost is a few plants, but it's still upsetting. I was talking to the neighbors and we're thinking about getting some sawhorses to block the street from through traffic when this happens again, as it inevitably will. That's probably not legal, but the rain drains off pretty quickly, so they'd only be up for 30 to 45 minutes and it would save everyones yard. The driving through the yards has happened here before. We're only 3 blocks north of Westheimer, a major road, so people trying to avoid the traffic and stalled cars always come tearing through here.

Ilovejesus99, thanks so much for your kind offer of plants. I'm going to try to do clean up tomorrow and see just how bad it all is. Also, I'm so sorry to hear about the recent loss of your husband. I've been there, and it's such a devastating thing to lose your partner, friend and spouse. It's not something you ever get over. Contrary to the old saying, time doesn't heal all wounds, but it does get better than the raw grief of that first year. Wishing you all the best.

Loved the gecko story!

Thanks. The gecko was so cute.

I am sorry you have been through the loss of your spouse. I am so devasted. I would never wish this pain on anyone. I have never believed anyone who said it gets better. I know they mean well. No one could have convinced me I would lose him at 51. I love him more each day and he is not even here. I think being diabled makes it hard on me because I can't work and I stay in the house too much. Can't convince myself to do anything. I have been going to church on sundays. I missed the last one. I need to go on wed also. Just motivation is not something I have right now.

Anyway let me know if you need any plants. If I have anythng it is yours.

Blessings,
Sandy ^8^

Crowelli - I'm so sorry to hear about all the damage. That must have been just horrible.

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

Your rain and other devastation are just too much to be believed! How horrible? Whatever happened to simple decency? I hope that everything is not completely ruined for you and your neighbors. The self policing w/saw horses sounds "sound" to me. It will be an inconvenience for those wishing to cut thru but sometimes you just can't be too careful. Good luck to you!

That is a real bummer. I'm sorry you lost so many plants and that the inconsiderate idiot probaby finished ruining what may have been able to be saved. I heard it was pretty bad in some parts. I know one guy at work had to leave early Friday because he drove his car through high water and had to get it fixed. Lucky for him he's already a motor head. The bright side is....you get to go plant shopping again. :)

I'm so sorry, crowelli. :-( We had 4+ inches of rain plus hail, too. Our street, which didn't flood at all during TS Allison in 2003, was flooded up to the sidewalks. I'm very grateful that the garden is above the high water line! On his way home from work, my husband had to pull over at a closed gas station about 3 blocks from home and wait for a little over 4 hours for the water to go down. Our neighbor has lived here since these houses were built 38 years ago, and she said she has only seen the water this high once before in that time, so it's very rare.

hi all, sorry to hear about the storm and i will keep you in my thoughts..... fools will be fools when it rains and floods.... you may try to get a few big boulders and line a few betwen the sidewalk and street.... i have seen one car siting on one after
the water recedes, am sure the fool who drove on yard will never do it agian ! the car , i saw, had to be prided off with a tow truck.... he had instant draining of his car as there was no floorboard left! one big ole hole! i thought it was kinda funny. :-)
