Something New?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I am so curious to see how one of my rooted suckers of 'Harmomy's Little Stinker' (foliage chimera) will progress. It is most unusual in that the foliage had become very dark green with a distict white center stripe. I am hoping it will stay this way and provide us with something new.

First I will post some pics of a 'normal' HLS and then show you the odd one so you can see the comparison side by side.

Here are two suckers rooted at the same time from the same plant as a side by side comparison. As you can see the 'odd' one is on the left compared to a 'typical' one.

That's really cool, with the stripe like that! I hope you get it to hold true for you!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Me too! There would be nothing like it that I know of. Has anyone seen foliage like this odd striped one before?

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

What an interesting plant! The newer version is very pretty!

Very cool Snowrose, you may have a new leaf type.

Wow,that is different. Very nice.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I am most surprised and happy for it. I will nurture it along and when big enough to do a crown cutting, that's what i'll do to propagate this. My guess is the blossom will be the same but who knows. Fingers crossed hoping it stays the way it is.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Those are both fantastic, Snowrose.....I am REALLY hoping that it stays that way.

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is so cool Snowrose.

That just has to be, by far, the coolest plant I have ever seen (both the true one and the new one)!!

(Zone 1)

Oh, I love it! Very different .... and so pretty. Hope you post a pic when it blooms so we can all see if the flower be the same as the mom plant!

I am still confused about Chimera's ... so there's chimera foliage as well as chimera blossoms? I think someone said the chimera blossom looks like a pinwheel with stripes from the center of the flower out to the edge? I love the Flower on your Mom Plant as well as the foliage, but that one you got from a Sucker is so unusual .... I've never seen anything like it. Imagine how gorgeous it will be when it's full grown! Please keep posting pic's as it grows!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Thanks, I will post it's progress.

Here is some info on chimeras. Yes, there are a few foliage types as well as many blossom types. As you probably already know, chimeras cannot be propagated by leaves as the chances are extremely high to nill that they will be 'true'.

A Chimera (pronounced ki {long i}-meera) is an African violet that will not reproduce truly from a leaf cutting. The only way to get more chimeras is by suckering or planting the flower stalk. Because propagation takes longer than using regular leaf propagation, chimeras tend to be more expensive. The blossoms of the chimera have pinwheel stripes, though some have had swirls.

There is also a chimeral foliage where propagation by leaf cuttings produced true flower color, but will not produce the variegated foliage. The only way to produce both the true flower and variegation is by suckers.

that bit of info has been bookmarked.....need all the help we can get!!!

Very Cool Snow!!!! I love the 'odd' one. I just put down suckers from mine about 2 weeks ago. I don't have anything like yours, but I'll keep watching.

I'd like to see detail pics of you doing a crown cutting. I have no idea how that's done. It's to produce more suckers??

Here's Mom and suckers.

Your plant(s) are lookin' good, Baja! Don't you love that Harmony's Little Stinker? It is so unique. You asked about how to do a crown cutting in order to propagate chimeras. . Here is an old thread where I showed how it's done....at least the way I do it.

WOW Snowrose! That is one fantastic plant! Have you tried to start just a leaf as well?
Would be interesting to see what came from it too.
Do keep us posted!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

another page bookmarked!! thanks

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I have tried just putting down a leaf from the mother plant and the resulting plantlets were plain green with the same blossom. I will do as you suggest later and see what will happen with the oddball. My guess is that it will be plain green also but we'll see.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

baja....that must be one of the good ebay dealers!!
good luck with your project

Snow, thanks for that link!! I've got a plant I don't like I'm gonna try it on. I was gonna throw it away.
Did you do a crown cutting on your HLS mom?
Yep, Gail. One of the good ones!!

Drumheller, Alberta, Canada(Zone 3a)

FYI
I experimented with the crown cutting on my Mauna Loa, a while back. The crown was super tight anyways. I am happy to announce that it worked really well. I ended up with 5 suckers. So now I have some up for trade! LOL

The only reason I am posting this strep on this thread is because it has variegated foliage.........I have never seen variegated foliage on a strep????

PS I was too tired to take the plants somewhere else to take pictures....sorry for all the legs on chairs (LOL)

Hey Snow
Love the striped leaf!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Hey there nannanavarro! Good morning. Been thinking about you. How are you and your plants doing?

Gail, your strep is stunning. I like the variegated ones so much.

Silver Spring, MD

I'm doing pretty well. The plants are suffering from neglect but they are hanging in.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Neglect? Well, violets are pretty resilient and can recover or we can always start some over. I have been amazed at times at how some of mine hung in there barely when I have been not the best caretaker and revived with a little attention. Plus, there are always new ones as an option. Last winter wasn't my best time and so many of my plants suffered. I pared down my collection drastically to make it more manageable and not so overwhelming.

Silver Spring, MD

I hear you. I did the same thing. Plus, heat was so expensive the little darlings suffered through the winter.

Ramblin' Spot is still doing great. It stopped blooming last month so I repotted it this morning. Hope that gives it a little boost. It is large and lovely even without the blooms. BUT violets should bloom.

What were your new choices in plants?

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

As I go through phases and tangents with gesnerieds, my focus lately has been streps, episcias, let's see, I put down about a dozen kohleria rhizomes, I still have a few violets I will continue to grow but nothing major new there. Spending more time outdoors and doing lots out there. Do you have azaleas blooming now, nanna?

Speaking of a trailing violet that is not wanting to bloom, here is 'Twice Pink' which should look good when she decides to get around to it.

Thumbnail by Snowrose
Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh my goodness, Snowrose, is she ever a beauty with that very variegated foliage!!! (if she never blooms, the foliage is enough to make one happy)

(Zone 1)

Oh .... 'Twice Pink' is Gorgeous! That's one you you gave me leaves from! I didn't know it was so Beautiful! Yay! My two little leaves have roots, can't wait for babies to show their little faces! You also gave me two leaves of 'Ramblin Spots' ... do you have a photo of that whole plant?

Now ... a question about pot size! What kind of pots should be used for Trailing AV's? Someone recently told me they need to be in very wide pots so that they don't trail outside the pot??!! I thought that was the purpose of trailers, so they would do just that, trail, so I am confused! Can I use those bulb type pots or something called pan pots that are shallow but a bit wider than the 4" pots?

Silver Spring, MD

So beautiful, Snow.

The azeleas down here are in full bloom. We have light and dark pink and white. The Iris have just started; the lilacs have just finished. I have the vegetables planted AND the strawberries are in bloom. Yum!

My lipstick plant is getting ready to bloom and the guppy plant has a few little goldfish. I have two strep that decided to bloom again and a new little thing called Blue Baby Tears. I'll see if I can send pictures soon.

Good to be back.

(Zone 1)

Oh Nanna ... sure hope you can post a photo of your plant Blue Baby Tears. Is that an AV or an outdoor garden plant?

Our Azalea's quit blooming a few months ago. Being so far South ours bloom in the February/ March time frame. And, I don't think we get the extended blooming time on Azaleas that y'all get farther North. :(

Right now my Huge Gardenia Bush is full of flowers and the aroma is Awesome! My Oleander's have been blooming for a few months now too and are very pretty.

I have Knock Out Roses and Red Penta's that have been blooming for quite awhile now too. They are going strong and attracting Butterflies like crazy!

Can't wait to see your picture of Blue Baby Tears! Sounds like a pretty plant!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, I am convinced after getting these plants from the AV sale that I am growing in too large of a size pot on everything!!! The 'Dresden Doll' I got has 4 big crowns in a small 3" pot. I am going to start using smaller pots and follow the rules of 3x before I pot up to the next size on anything.....(I think that is the rule (LOL)
Only 1 of the 4 crowns is blooming....

Baja...good idea to practice on one you don't care about. It's a little intimidating at first but now I don't think twice about it. It's kind of challenging and fun actually.

Ccino....good return on your mauna Loa with the price of chimeras. I can't believe what chimeras can go for on Ebay. Astounding sometimes.

Plantladylin....I'll post a pic or two of Ramblin' Spots. I do think Twice Pink will be very pretty when she blooms. A shy one...
I don't go into the bulb pan thing but some growers love them. Your yard sounds so delightful, Lin.

Nannanavaro....I know your yard is gorgeous with the azaleas. It's pretty anyway. Aside from autumn, this time of year is glorious for us. Welcome back! You were missed.

Gessiegail...your Dresden Doll is just that. A doll! Looks good but when you want to re-pot, go to a 4". Should be fine. The plant Twice Pink (trailer) shown is a bit over a foot across in a 4" azalea pot grown wicked. I date when I repot them on the name label. It could go up a size soon to a 5".

I just love learning!!!!! It is always tempting to me just to make more plants..............I am going to stop this practice of tearing up everything................Twice Pink is amazing being over a foot across.....have to have some big plants!!!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Here's a Ramblin Spots as practically a baby in first bloom not showing her spots as clearly as it did later. They were very faint at first.

Ooooh ... So Pretty! I love Ramblin Spots! And, Miss Gail - That Dresedn Doll is Wonderful .... I might just have to put that on my want list for when I get some more space!

Does anyone have a pic of an Azalea Pot? I bought some little pots on line awhile back, from either Rob's or Bluebirds .... they are little green pots, some 2" and some 4". What exactly is an Azalea Pot and do they come in different sizes?

The Heart of Texas, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh that's a very pretty one! Kinda reminds me of Easter candy colors..

Mmmm, I wonder where I could put just one more???lol
