Irises in SC

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Does anyone know of a nursery or farm near Summerville that has a huge selection of bearded iris? I would like to find someone who specializes in growing irises.

Oh golly! I don't know but if you find out, I don't want to know because I'll be in big trouble! LOL!

Seriously tho, I can't recall any such place, but hopefully someone else knows more about it. Any I have, I got by mail order.

I can't help with your location, but if you ever make it up to Columbia let me know. My parents started a small project about 10 years ago with Iris's and Daylilies and now they have several acres growing several hundred varieties of each. I have never seen so many types of Iris. I love walking down the paths of them they have planted. They see folks from as far away as NC and GA, so let me know if you're ever in the Irmo/Columbia area. I'll give you their location and you can stop by if you'd like.

Thanks, John. I'll let you know the next time I am headed that way. I'd love to see their iris garden. It would be nice to know which varieties flourish the most in this area. I've noticed that some of mine do very well here, while others do not.

Could it be the soil differences I wonder? What is your soil like in Summerville? They have clay in the Irmo area, but we have nothing but sand over in Lexington. Strange how quickly it changes from place to place.

Most of mine is sandy soil. Lexington is a pretty place to live. I visited there when my students auditioned for the All-State Band. It looks like they are really developing the area, and the high school is going to be huge when they are finished with it. How do you like living there?

Lexington, SC(Zone 8a)

For the time we've been over here, I like it. It's incredibly busy though. I dated a girl from Gilbert about 7 years ago, and Lexington wasn't nearly this busy then. It's really grown up.

Irmo's the same way though. When I moved out of Irmo into Cola just two years ago, it was still fairly quite outside of town limits. Now the town is stretching and growing like a sponge soaking up water. Even my folks are caught in the middle of the fight of annexation now.

It's too bad that they are expanding so fast that they probably aren't thinking about the total impact that it will have on all of the people living there (Irmo), not to mention the impact on all of the historical and natural surroundings. The Charleston/Summerville area is expanding so fast, that politicians cannot even keep up with all of the historical impacts. Contractors are builing in historic areas, completely wiping out much of our history (around the Ashley River and the plantations). They're building so fast, that local residents don't even realize it until it's too late. I don't mind the expansion....I just really wish they would just slow down for a while. It's been like this for about five years now, and it hasn't slowed down since. I love it here though, and will probably be here for a long time.
