OT smoke detectors

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

We had the fire dept to our place today, the upstairs tenent wasn't home, but the smoke alram was blaring, the dog was howling and we could smell smoke. So the fire dept came, said the toaster oven was on and had burnt something badly and could've caught fire soon. They took >1/2 hour to clear the air with their fan. We and our stuff are fine, but just glad we got home when we did.

This is a gentle and timely reminder for all of you to check your smoke detectors to make sure they are working. It saved our house today.

That's pretty scary, thank goodness you were there to notify the fire department.

So glad you are OK. What a horrible intro to your new house. Thank goodness you came home when you did.

After talking to the Mom and daughter upstairs, turns out the daughter was cooking pizza in it, forgot and was on her way downtown. Realised she forgot the toaster oven and made her way back, but by bus it took >1.5 hours. Also found out the daughter had a dream last night that her house burned down. (here's where someone whistles the theme from Twight Zone!)

We are happy it turned out as good as it did.

Thanks for the good reminder. And the ads on TV say if they are over 10 years old they should be replaced. I suspect ours are at that point but am having difficulty motivating DH.

Linda, so glad you guys are fine and that you got home when you did. It is a very good reminder. My rule of thumb is to put new batteries in all detectors when the time changes in the fall, so you always know you are current.

Finally got DH to pull ours down. Sure enough, there were dates to indicate they were about 13 years old. We now have new ones.
