I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for Proteas? I didn't find this cultivar in Plant Files, but since "Goldi" was begging to have her picture taken, I wanted to put her somewhere :-)
Pincushion Protea
If you're reasonably confident that the plant was labelled correctly, I would add it to Plant Files (the genus is Leucospermum though not Protea--might want to doublecheck PF if you were looking for it under Protea. It's still in Proteaceae family though).
I love these, there was a nursery in Escondido years ago that grew them on the hillsides, you could buy seedlings, flower stems etc. Too bad the owner died and they sold the nursery off for development.*SIGH*
What is the latin name of this plant, Anyone know?
Leucospermum
Actually, I am interested in the whole name. Is "goldie" actually the cultivar? is it a hybrid?
The plants were tagged "Goldie", and I purchased them from a very reliable nursery (not big box place). To find more information, I googled this cultivar and found it called Leucospermum Cuneiforne "Goldie" from this site: http://www.highbirnam.co.za/protea_varietys.htm - I counted this as cultivar confirmation since this is a protea nursery and the pictures matched up.

Thanks Karen, Yours is prettier than the picture at the site. The site says its a hybrid:
Leucospermum Cuneiforne "Goldie"
A delightful yellow pincushion hybrid. A refreshing additive to any floral arrangement or garden
Have you grown many of these? How big do they get? Iwould guess there is a lot of variable in size. I grow tropicals over winter in the green house so for me, size matters. I really like these plants and woundn't mind giving up some floor space to a couple of them...
I really know nothing about them, other than no fertilizer and they like drought conditions - I read somewhere they can get to about 5' of bushiness. I saw these two at the side with a bunch of sorta dead plants and I took one up to the counter and asked about care and their cost. The nursery people didn't seem to know much more than I did (nothing), and said that they thought they were dead, which is why they were over on the side. They seemed quite surprised that they had flowers ands told me I could have them both for $15.00 :-) Ever since this happened now I always look at the "almost dead" section hoping for another little miracle. I whipped out that VISA super fast, as they really fit in for what I'm doing with a drought-y corner of my hill. I figure if they don't make it, I'm not out a lot, but so far so good - they seem quite happy and are quite a conversation piece in my garden :-)
Thanks for the compliment on the picture.
They are really faboo, thanks for sharing them...
