What is a wooly worm we see in the early fall?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Sometimes the wolly worms are black and brown and sometimes they are all brown or all black. The all black ones are usually thinner. What emerges from them?

'Howdy' Suzy ..

The Wooly Bear Caterpillars morph into the Isabella Tiger Moth.

Here > http://bugguide.net/index.php?q=search&keys=Isabella+Tiger+Moth
and here, in DG's BugFiles > http://davesgarden.com/bf/go/1713/

An interesting read about the caterpillars, is here > http://www.woodlanddunes.com/ripples_arch_121601.html

Thanks, Magpye! I've been wondering about those furry little guys myself. :-)

Oh, I was hoping it was something better looking or more exotic looking. Guess I should have known since they are all over the place in late summer. LOL!

Thaks for the response. I shoud have typed "wooly" into BugFiles, but I thought that's just what my friends and I called them.... woolyworms.
