what type of growing mix do you prefer? Will they do well in spaghnum moss? Thank You to anyone who responds... SMG
growing mix
Mine aren't too particular. I have some growing in nothing but air, most in the ground (which is pure Florida sugar sand), some in Orchid mix, and some in moss as you described. I notice when I purchase bromeliads, a lot of the places use mixes that would be similar to what you might plant an orchid in. Which makes sense when you consider they both need good drainage. You just want to be sure the soil doesn't stay wet and cause any rot.
I agree with ml.
Moss will not provide a stable platform and the new roots are likely to be damaged if the plant moves around much in the mix.
Thank you both for your input. I appreciate it. Im looking for any little bit of help I can get.
Another question... Should I mix the orchid bark with a soil or just do it plain? Also, what tpe of fertilizer should I use and how do I apply?
SJ, I mix in a little chopped peat or terrestrial orchid mix into the phal mix to keep some moisture there, hold onto fertilizer, etc. Maybe a quarter peat or TO mix and the rest phal mix. Or else I use C&S mix, sometimes with extra perlite. That drains quickly but retains a little moisture too. http://www.repotme.com just started selling a special brom mix. It looks similar to the TO mix I bought from them.
