This photo and the next are definitely not showing Ecer. triglochidiatus but Echinocereus engelmannii.
They should be moved to that entry.

Ken,
I tend to agree with Jordi. Where about in California did you encounter this plant? What County?
Xeno.

Xeno, my records show this picture as taken near Nipton, California. Does that help,
Ken
According to the USDA.gov site, there are 4 different Echinocereus that occur in the San Bernadino County.
They are:
1). Echinocereus engelmannii var. chrysocentrus
(Thicker stems and Very longer white central spines)
http://plants.usda.gov/java/largeImage?imageID=ecenc_001_ahp.tif
2). Echinocereus engelmannii var. howei
(which also occurs across the Nevada border in Clark County. It is rare, threatened, or endangered in CA and elsewhere. It has Extremely numerous all golden spines.)

3.) Echinocereus engelmannii var. munzii (syn: Echinocereus munzii)
(It has VERY thick stems at least 6-8 inches thick, and white spines)

4). Echinocereus mojavensis (syn: Echinocereus triglochidiatus var. mojavensis)
(Tends to form mounds and has 4-5 inch thick stems with fewer spines that are very long and white and curved)

Yours more closely matches E. engelmanni var chrysocentrus

Xeno.
Thanks Xeno, I have asked admin to move the image to the Echinocereus engelmannii var. chrysocentrus page,
Ken
