Passiflora caerulea 'Blue Crown' or 'Blue Dream' problems...

Hulbert, OK(Zone 7a)

A gentleman called today asking a few questions about
passion flower that I'm afraid I cannot answer, as I am only
truly familiar with P. incarnata.

He reports the vine grows extremely well in his greenhouse
but does not fruit well. He stated the fruits seem to be of
normal size, but jump from green to yellow and have nothing
inside of them.

I thought it might be a pollination issue, but it was odd that
he mentioned the fruit reached that size. I would think if it
was not pollinated, it would not fruit to such an extent.

Any ideas?

He also asked if they were self pollinated, again, I could only
answer with my experience with p. incarnata, which to my
understanding relies on insect pollination, which we have plenty
of here in Oklahoma.

Hi Karen,

Many of the passiflora are self-incompatible. They need another vine or clone of the same species for successful pollination. Flowers from a single vine will not pollinate each other. I have a large caerulea vine (single clone) that will not fruit either. Last year I got 2 fruits, both empty. So the solution is to get another caerulea vine that is not from the same parent plant.

Mark,

Bingo, you have answered the question to perfection!

Thank you so much. Will pass this on. Many thanks!

Mine survived in the ground against a south-facing stone wall - it that cool or what?!!! It is just now coming up and identifiable. I am so happy about this, because the colors are amazing in the bloom. I am in Missour, zone 6
