Calling all callas

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

This is the 2nd bloom ever on my Giant White or Hercules. Without checking my journal I can't say for sure, right this minute. Planted inground, full sun, but near a sprinkler head and protected from the sun by rose shrubs. Mine is not bothered by slugs, which is a miracle, as I live in slug country.

I planted both callas, and since I haven't gotten them straight in my brain, I took the precaution of planting them far apart.

Leaves are large and speckled. But both plants have large leaves. The other one is solid green. I don't see any flower action on that other one yet.

Here is my darling Picasso, planted 3 bulbs (12" apart) last year. Went totally dormant last summer. All 3 have come back twice the size and I'm delighted about that. The bloom is not fully open but I just had to show off, lol.

Last year I also planted calla bulbs from Ebay and WM and nothing happened. Yet this year I have nice greenery showing. Those, plus the ones from the two 2007 coops, and I'll have callas coming out of my ears! But that's not a bad thing, is it?

Your white Calla looks so good and the large speckled leaves sets it off. My Callas are just now starting to come up and I am so relieved to see them. We had a terrible winter and then a very late freeze this spring so I had some concerns about them. No Voss, Callas coming out of your ears is a good thing. Lol

Nice Voss--I've had callas since March blooming.

Beautiful, Voss. I just put Vermeer in the ground. I hope it's 1/2 as nice as your Picasso! That white is also fabulous.
I'm pushing a zone. I planted them on the North side of the house pretty close to the house at a sunny corner. There's also a heat exhaust vent about 4 ft above it. I'm hoping for the best.

There's a lot of speculation at this point that Vermeer and Picasso are one and the same. I bought Vermeer thru the coop and hope to be able to resolve this mystery for myself. I think the chalice on the Vermeer is slightly bigger, but we shall see.

Good growing to all us calla lovers

Does anybody know if callas open up once cut or if I should have waited for them to open up some more before cutting. These are from one Picasso plant and I have three! Add to that the ones from the coop and from HD/Walmart, and I'll be able to set up my own plant stand, lol.

I posted this question in another post, but I thought I would ask again. I planted my callas as soon as I got them from the Pacific Calla co op. I am not seeing anything. They are in dappled sun. Do they need more sun? Should I move them? SHould I see anything at all yet?

Mine are in morning sun, almost half the day. 4 or 5 hours for sure. I am just now seeing shoots poking through the ground. Maybe 2 leaves unfurled.

How deep are they planted? How many hours of sun do they get?

These are some of my callas from July lined up around my little pond. Z. alba maculata, Flame, Millenium Gold. The white petunia in one of the pots was a volunteer! Some of the other containers have alyssum and lobelia...

Dayna,
It takes about 4-6 weeks to see a calla shoot come up from bare tubers--if you planted them at the right depth, planted it right-side up, and gave it good draining soil and lots of water. They need at least 4 hours of sun to grow and flower. It is best in the a.m. and have shade during the hottest and brightest time of the day.

The "right depth" for planting would be 4-6 inches, depending on the size of the tuber. The bigger the deeper. They do like lots of water, so be liberal, especially in your warm zone. Fertilizer is an added boost.

Oooh, Giant Hercules is awesome!! I used to have purple "Noami Campbells" but threw them out because the foilage became monstrous and spreading and jungle-messy. The flowers stood on top of all that though, and last a long time, but I just didn't like the space-hogging and mess.

This year, I planted a "Captain Romance" and was disappointed--it is not as pink in color nor as tall as it should be. The leaves are upright pointing (California calla-like) and the flower stalk too short and hidden from view. I didn't even know it had a flower stalk until I hit it with the water hose spray and knocked it out from hiding. The flower is pale, almost white. Bummer.
