I saw my first butterfly in my yard this year!

Well, since I've been in this house for that matter and it's been a year. I was outside planting my new hydrangea when I saw it. It was scoping things out I think. It fluttered around my front yard and stopped on the plumeria for a bit. I went inside to get my camera and my 5 year old. I couldn't get a picture. It went across the street to scope out that yard and then back this way and fluttered off to the unknown. It was nice to see it though! It looked like a Monarch. Do they come down in these parts?

Can you describe what it looked like? Monarchs do come your way! How exciting! I hope you start seeing more and more!!! Yay!

It was pretty big! It was black with gold and white dots. The black was like the outline...like you see in a coloring book and the gold was the color. the white dots were on the tips, don't remember if they were on top or bottom ends though.

Your description sure sounds like what Deb is thinking! Love those American Ladies! How wonderful to get such a beautiful butterfly to grace your yard! Maybe he's the scout butterfly and more will follow! (I hope so!)

I could have been that. I wish he would have perched on a flower or bush long enough for me to take a picture. Oddly enough, he was checking out a lot of the weeds. lol

I think it was a Monarch after seeing fly-girl's picture in another thread!

Plant some Milkweed. If it was a Monarch, more will come if you have the plants in your yard! Do you have Milkweed plants/seeds?

Cypress, TX(Zone 9a)

No. I have 7 rose bushes, 3 hydrangea, 5 gerbera daisies, 3 dwarf dahlias, bleeding heart, 5 oleanders, a tree of some sort, moss rose, jasmine, 2 double knockouts, gardenia, diathus, mini roses, plumeria, chrisanthemums and purple queens on the side which are going out. Oh and a fuchsia hanging. The front yard wasn't even what I was trying to make butterfly/hummer friendly! Or at least not yet. It looked like was scouting the area.

He'll be back! Let us know what others you see.
